Voking VK900 flash for Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras

Voking VK900 Professional Speedlight for Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras review by Bill Hall (for pricing and availability check Amazon):

The Voking VK900 (also known as V900) is a fully featured speedlight for Nikon digital SLRs and mirrorless cameras. It supports i-TTL, manual, repeating, and off-camera modes. It can be used to control other flashes off-camera, and can itself be used off-camera.

It is compatible with any camera with a standard Nikon hot shoe. With a full feature set, and at a current price of $57.51, it will find a home with both amateurs and professionals.

This flash is compatible with the latest Nikon professional full frame DSLR cameras such as the D5, D850, and the APS-C cameras such as the D500. It’s also compatible with the mirrorless Z 6 and Z 7 cameras. It’s also compatible with the D3400, D3300, D3200, D5600, D750, D7200, D5300, D5500, D7100, D3100, and other Nikon DSLR cameras.

The VK900 can be a master controller or a slave flash optically. It can control and fire a Voking VK750III flash as a slave unit.

This speedlight has all of the advanced features that you would expect from a top of the line professional flash.

The guide number for this flash is 52m at 35 mm and ISO 100.

One of the problems with speedlights has always been overheating. This flash has a thermometer symbol on the screen that it uses to indicate if it is overheating.

Bounce flash can be employed in either landscape or portrait orientation. Tilt angles range from minus seven to 90 degrees, and it can be rotated a full 180 degrees horizontally in either direction.

Flash coverage is automatically set depending on the camera and lens settings.

A built in AF illuminator aids autofocus in lower light levels. There is also a modeling lamp that is controlled by pressing a button. [Note: The Z 7 and Z 6 cameras don’t support the AF illuminator function.]

The VK900 has a very clear and readable screen that is used for changing settings. A mode button changes modes, and a dial and ok button are used to change settings. Some of the settings can be changed in the menu of compatible cameras.

This is an easy to use flash. It is a full sized unit, and at 1 lb 7/8 oz with batteries, it’s not compact or super light. It is almost exactly the same size as my Nikon SB800. But this is outweighed by its added capability and adequate power. On a larger camera, it balances nicely, and it also seemed comfortable on my Nikon Z 6.

This speedlight is a powerful flash. The guide number is 42m (170 ft) at 35mm and ISO 100.

For anyone using any of the Nikon entry level, prosumer, or professional DSLR or mirrorless cameras, this flash is a good fit. Its full feature set should be able to cover any situation you may encounter. With heat management and full integration with Nikon cameras, this is a very good alternative to the name brand flashes.
