Only 1000 Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lenses are produced every month



The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens has been out of stock since it was announced in August 2018 (I am lucky to have one). Nikon Japan already issued several apologizes on the lens shortage. A few months ago Amazon removed the order option for the Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E and the lens no longer appears in Amazon’s search results. Amazon also canceled all existing pre-orders (for that reason I strongly suggest ordering from Adorama and B&H).



A few months ago I posted some possible explanation on why the lens is hard to find. A reader recently sent me a screenshot from the German NPS website that states the monthly production capacity of the 500mm f/5.6 lens is limited to approximately 1000 lenses:
