This short video created by Ron Volmershausen is showing the story behind a Nikon lens that turned into the HAL 9000 in the epic movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” from the 1960s . Using a collection of screen-grabs and footage taken from other sources, the video tells the story about how the lens would go on to become an important and iconic part of movie history:

Update from Ron Volmershausen: Since posting this video it has come to my attention that the prop shown here (originally from the Christie’s auction) may in fact be fake. Comparisons of this prop and the one seen in the movie reveals differences that are very obvious. The most obvious being the size and position of the speaker grill. The original having at least 18 horizontal perforated rows and the one shown in this footage only having 12.
