November 2022 CIPA numbers


CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association in Japan) published their latest camera production data (orange: 2022, black: 2021, blue: 2020):

As compared with the single month of November 2021, DSLR shipped units were up 2.2%, Mirrorless was up 51.1% and Compacts were down 30.4%. Lenses for smaller than 35mm cameras were up 31.4% and lenses for 35mm and larger were down 10.3%.

Interestingly, just for the month of November, shipped value of Compacts slightly exceeded shipped value of DSLRs.

Looking at November’s production level, we expect December to have fewer shipments than November.

Mirrorless bodies now take 85.8% of ILC shipped value.

CIPA has predicted 5.29 million DSLR and Mirrorless bodies for calendar 2022 and Nikon has predicted a market of 5.1 million for April ‘22 to March ‘23.   We predicted 4.75 to 5.14 million units in June, 5.08 to 5.36 million units in July, 5.1 to 5.5m in August, 5.6 million in September , about 5.75 million in October and are now predicting about 5.8-5.9 million as compared to:

Cumulative 2022 Mirrorless unit share (of Mirrorless + DSLR): 68.7% (was 58.6% YTD 2021)
Cumulative 2022 Mirrorless Shipped Value share: 85.8% (was 78.1% YTD 2021)

The ratio of lenses shipped to bodies shipped is 1.66 for YTD 2022.  It was 1.78 for YTD 2021.
