The different Nikon EN-EL15 battery versions

A reader sent me some additional information on the different Nikon EN-EL15 battery versions based on feedback from Nikon support:

Q: Can you confirm if the battery life in the D850 is the same for both EN-EL15 black batteries and the EN-EL15a grey batteries? I have seen conflicting accounts in the press.

A: Battery life is the same.

Q: Is there a difference in battery life with the D850 or the Z7 between these two batteries and the EN-EL15b (dark grey) battery we expect to receive with the Z7? I know it includes compatibility with USB in-camera charging, but it is battery life I am interested in.

A: While there are no technical differences of the EN-EL15b battery (other than USB charging), capacity is identical to the EN-EL15a or EN-EL15 (20) when used in D500 or D850. EN-EL15b can be charged via USB – EN-EL15 (20) or EN-EL15a cannot.
