BCN Ranking surprise: Nikon at the #1 spot in fixed lens cameras in Japan with 31% market share

BCN Ranking (now called BCN+R) published their digital camera ranking for the first half of 2018 and there is a surprise:

In the first half of 2018, Nikon got at the #1 spot in the fixed lens camera segment with a market share of 31% (Canon is now at the #2 spot). I am not sure how this happened since Nikon doesn’t really have any interesting Coolpix offering (except the P900), while Canon continues to produce high-end compact cameras. I can only imagine Nikon’s market share if they did not cancel the DL line.

With mirrorless cameras, Olympus was at the #1 spot in 2017 with 27.7%, but in the first six months of 2018 Canon is at the #1 spot with 30.1% market share. There is no mention of Sony or Fuji in the BCN+R article.

I could not find any DSLR market share data.

Here is a translated recap from our friends digicame-info (if anyone has a better translation, please post in the comments section):

In the first half of the current fiscal year, the camera was the biggest change compared to the annual share of 2017. For lens integrated type, Canon was the top with 27.9% of the market share in 2017, but in the first half of 2018 Nikon maintained 31.0% with Canon out of line with low-cost routes, surpassed Canon.

With mirrorless single lens reflex, Olympus was top with 27.7% in 17 years, but in the first half of 2006 the Canon who launched the strongest brand “EOS Kiss” with a lens-interchangeable camera in the mirror less at 30.1% took the top position.

As far as I know, BCN+R collects sales data from approximately 2/3 of all Japanese retail stores.
