Nikon D850 suggestion for fast changeable user settings

Stephan Haase is the author of the Nikon D850 book in Germany (in German language). After using the Nikon D850, he came to the conclusion that the ability to store different user settings is not optimal. Here is his suggestion on how to improve it:

Suggestion for fast changeable user settings

In this document, I would like to make a suggestion to improve the handling of the Nikon D850.

There are many situations where you as a photographer would like to change some menu options (between two and five) simultaneously. Currently, you have the possibility to use the four configuration banks of the photo shooting menu and the custom settings. Here the current menu options:

This is a good idea in principle, but in practice, there are some disadvantages:

  • All settings that are to be changed in all banks must be made individually in each bank. This is laborious and time-consuming. There is no possibility to copy settings from one bank to another.
  • The subdivision into photo shooting menu and custom functions require knowing which category a particular feature is in.
  • Since all the settings of the corresponding bank change when choosing the configuration, you must always remember which settings you made.
  • Options from the Playback and System menus cannot be included in a bank at all.

My suggestion:

So I thought about how to solve these problems and I’ve created a few screenshots to show what it might look like.

I would suggest creating a new menu called e. g. CUSTOM BANK. Here you can define six individual configurations (A-F) with personal names.
Similar to the MY MENU you can add any item from the menu to each bank:

The settings of these options act as an override to the standard menu settings. If you want to change a couple of settings for example for sports photography, you can choose these items in BANK A. This might be for example the ISO-settings, the image area and the AF-mode. In the same way you can assign the required items for long exposures and landscape photography and change the settings of the selected options as you like:

To select the required bank, I would suggest using the Fn2 button. By default, the Fn2 button has no function in shooting mode. It would be nice, if you could choose the CUSTOM BANK as the rating in the playback mode.

So if you press the Fn2-button, you can switch from N (normal) to the custom bank A-F.

The settings which are changed can be displayed on the screen, so you are always informed:
