A reader sent me this DIY solution for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED lens tripod collar wiggle problem (this is for the old 300mm f/4 version that is still available for sale):
Lens vibration with the Nikkor 300 f/4 autofocus lens at slower shutter speeds has always been a problem. The tripod collar (for those of us who can’t afford the new 300 4 VR lens) allows the lens to “wiggle” when mounted to a tripod. There are posts online that use an old inhaler that is just the right size to wedge in between lens and bottom of mount, foam handles, etc. I have found the perfect $2.99 solution, a 3/8″-16 x 1″ well nut fits perfect. Any good hardware store with those bins of nuts and bolts sells them. They are made out of fairly hard rubber, with a brass screw insert. With a hacksaw, cut the one side of the bottom off (shown in photo) this makes the part fit right up against the raised part of the bottom of the collar mount. This gives the lens much needed support and doesn’t look to bad either.
