There have been some introspective and retrospective posts here lately that have had me thinking. Here's my attempt at something along those same lines.
Where or when do you feel most like a photographer? For extra credit: Why? Even more extra credit for related pictures.
When I have a camera and because my shirt says Nikon Pro on it :^)

whn ever I have my camera on me and Im taking shots of something that I was planing to take shots of... not snapping some crap that my GF thinks is cool\cute\iwantone\adorable (never the less some of them work about quite good)
When I pull out my crappy (comparatively) D40 in a crowd of point and shoots.
That's when I feel awesome, because for that moment on paper, I have the best camera in the crowd.
Then someone walks up in a D3s with a 70-200 on it and my bubble gets popped.
I feel like a photographer when I'm taking pictures. I also feel like a photographer when I down load and edit. I used to feel like a photographer when I could bill clients for photographic work. I feel like a photographer because whenever I look at the world I see images, some of which I preserve.
Careful NSX, one of those soccer mom's point & shoots could actually be a Leica M9 and then the cakes on you :^)

But doesn't even that make you feel good that you chose a subject that other photographers are interested in? Your D40 can get the shot, too, except in special cases.
Ted, your response speaks to me, especially that last bit. When I read it, I thought about how since I've been seriously trying to be a photographer I look at the world differently. It's about taking 3D objects and figuring out what's the best perspective, lighting, and crop to make an image in 2D that is either interesting, educational (better), or might get someone to feel the same thing I feel when I see the subject (best).

Thanks Jonny, in a previous thread we talked about MF/SF vs AF and beauty of focusing a fast manual focus lens on a bright focusing screen. You can see the two dimensional plane as it slices through the scene.

For me its when I forget everything else ...unfortunately that includes what fstop Im in, what ISO and whether I am supposed to be somewhere else. I can even recall a photo I took two days ago where I just disappeared for a few seconds.

Good point there, but I was just kidding.
Honestly, I feel most like a photographer when I feel like I've nailed a shot just the way I want it.
I feel most like a photographer, when I am taking pictures...
When I go to my local camera store and hold the D3x with a 14-24mm f/2.8 attached to it, and know that eventually I will get something like it (or whatever it is at that time)...
But seriously? I feel like a photographer when I walk around and view the world through a photographer's eyes (viewing not just the world as we see it, but how it would look when composed into a shot) - even if I don't have a camera with me, I have a tendency to do that.

I agree, I'll be driving or walking around and constantly looking for lines, angles and general composition.

lol that's when you know you're passionate about photography...when you're constantly thinking of framing and composition.

Similar to what rhodium said but for me I just enjoy perceiving/knowing the world around me knowing I will never be able to capture even 1/1,000,000 of the beauty, pain, joy, textures, darkness, light etc etc etc.. all around us. I love just walking around anywhere in this amazing world we live in even if I don't have a camera with me.
I suppose I only feel like a photographer when I'm around other people. When I'm out shooting nature it doesn't feel the same way.
Usually I feel like a photographer when I feel pressured and stressed. That usually happens when I've gone through an 8GB card in a 1/2 hour. Aren't real photographers always saying they have stressful jobs?
I don't feel like a photographer, as I don't have any nikon shirt :)
