hi all, i'm looking for some help. 2 days ago while i was taking photos with my 10 month old nikon d5100, my lcd screen suddenly went black. there was no damage or drop. at that time, i could still take pictures which i could transfer to my computer via my sd card. however today i tried my camera again and now can't take a picture. when i look through the viewfinder, my iso is flashing "[E]"--I'm guessing for error?! Do you all think this is related to not being able to change the ISO setting because the LCD screen is black/can't see menu? or another problem?

I'm wondering because I bought my camera in the US but live close to Singpoare. I was thinking of just paying to have the LCD problem fixed because it's a hassle to mail the camera back and forth but if there is a another problem it might be worth it to send it to the US instead and have it repaired under warranty.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Thank,

    Rachel

Charge battery, reset camera. See if this corrects the situation. Make certain lens is fully locked in place. And we will see what others say...

Well, I had forgotten to put the SD card back in hence the problem with the ISO setting. So that's better, however the LCD screen is still black even with charging the battery, reseting the camera, and checking the lens. If there are any other thoughts to solve the LCD problem, I would love the help. Thanks so much.

Make certain camera is NOT in Live View, and that the mirror is not up. Turn camera off, remove lens and look. If the mirror is up this will be obvious. On a D5100, I do not think one can lock the mirror up manually, so this would be a problem. Also, make certain it is not in the interval timer mode, that the release mode is on a single exposure and not self timer, multiple FPS.

It's probably just died. If it's 10 months old I'd avoid the headache of trying to sort yourself, it'll be under warranty so contact the retailer.

thanks for everyone's suggestions. it looks like the lcd screen has just died. none of the issues that msmoto mentioned were an issue. looking forward to learning more from this forum and have enjoyed reading different threads.

    thanks,
