I cannot believe Nikon is a sponsor - I think their logo is just displayed on that site from previous events.
where there’s smoke there’s forum fire

it actually can be, depends on this what the fundraiser showed nikon, if they showed the pictures, than it's very likely
Nikon is making one of the finest hunting rifle-scopes on the market so I suppose some people are actually using Nikon gear to shoot animals.
The link on this particular page is an old one used for Nikon sports optics http://www.nikonoutdoors.com/, new one is http://www.nikonhunting.com/ more up to the point.
I understand hunting, but this looks like a killing spree - oh well maybe there is no difference.
These are very, very sick people. This puts a black mark against Nikon. I wonder if Nikon Corp. knows about this.
Again, I do not want to judge other people's way of life, but this doesn't look like regular hunting to me. I do not know much about this topic at all, that's why I posted it here.
If I can get more details, I will post this on the blog and we will get much more traction there. I just don't want to accuse anybody without more info.
I can also send an official request to Nikon PR agency for more info (I think I have their contact info).
I actually own a pair of binoculars made by nikon (they are excellent). It's not like they are out there hunting endangered species.
I won't say I'd condone mass slaughter, but i certainly wouldn't mind shooting the cyotes in the hills outside my house. Mostly they howl, and eat the occational cat. There's also a fox that hangs out around the bar, but I'm ok with him. There isn't much to eat in town but racoons.
Nikon is a big player in the hunting gear market, so you knd of have to expect this sort of thing. At least they aren't making periscope gear for subs like they used to. Would you buy a SLR from haliburton?
I used to hunt when I was younger, but I don't think it is hunting if you assert points to each kill, it is now killing plain and simple
Pete
Are any other shooters out there in the forum? Sounds like you have in the past at least, Pete. I don't hunt, but I love target shooting. I was just curious if there were others here because I think there are parallels between firing a gun and using a camera.

how about this - the best of both worlds: http://230grain.com/showthread.php?t=51051
and a build-in ipod....
Okay, I didn't mean that close a parallel. ;-)
Around here Nikon is more known for it's scopes and binoculars than for it's cameras :^( I've seen the Nikon logo sponsoring lot's of hunting "events". Not sure if they (Nikon) are officially official sponsors of events like this but they do have a huge following in the hunting world.
A hunter was once surprised with my Nikon gear. He didn't know Nikon made "fancy" cameras. He thought that only canon did since that's all he ever saw the wildlife photographers carry around.
I love animals and absolutely would NEVER hunt them! Unless of course I was really really hungry and Burger King was closed ;^)
The only time I have a problem with firearms is when they're pointed at me!
Jonny what kinda heat you packin son? I carry a pair of chrome eight plus ones and a 4 pounda :^)
Normally .22 because ammo is so cheap—I've got a Mossberg that is probably the most accurate gun I've shot. My favorite gun I've owned was an M1 Garand (.30 06) that I refinished and sold for 3x what I paid. I had to sell it to pay for school as an undergraduate. I also like trap and skeet with my dad's 12 guage. I haven't shot handguns much, but when I do it's pretty laughable. To be honest, I'm only a pretty good shot. My grandma could beat me when she was alive, but she competed back in the day so that's not as big a put-down as it might seem.
Ooh Mossberg... nice. Careful though or you'll shoot your eye out :^)
Sounds like your grandma was Annie Oakley?!

I also shot Trap and Skeet when I was teen, I worked at the shooting range to help pay for my shooting expenses, after moving to Canada I have newer used a shotgun
I have joke for you: Ex president Bush is planning a trip to the far east, would bring along a Nikon or a Canon --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He would bring a Cannon
Pete
ha ha bmxdad.
I know a guy who's got a crazy stock pile of weapons. He makes his own amo and goes "hunting" in "high fence" ranches were the animals are basically just lined up and shot. He prefers the high fence "reserves" because he knows he'll come back with something. I don't see the point in that at all! It's pretty damn stupid.
A really fun short story by Patrick McManus (I think it's in his book The Grasshopper Trap) is called 'gun running.' The gist is that you get your wife talking about 'all those guns' and it's easier to sneak new ones into the collection. It's got applications in photography: 'all those lenses.' ;-)
Unfortunately my wife requires I turn in all my serial numbers to her for that very reason :^(
Though she says it's for insurance purposes only.
I found it on google books if you're interested. Too bad about the tight ship, Niko.
I'm kidding jonny! She's great and I love her dearly. Even when she's a pain in the...
Thanks for the link.
I love target shooting, unfortunately haven't done it for the last 10 years. It cost too much in poland, and if I go to US, I go there for other activities. Although, will never forget that You could go to Walmart and buy a shotgun, and some ammo in the same way You buy bread or water.
As for handguns, I loved .44 magnum - nice kick, was also shooting from .22 and a lot of different rifles :)
Make My Day Adam!
It's kinda funny that some photographers are surprised that Nikon has a "hunting" section within the company and the hunters are surprised to hear Nikon makes cameras. I wonder what the Nikon lithography guys think of us?
Hey I found a link to Nikon's new Rangefinder!
http://www.nikonhunting.com/rangefinders-monarch-800.html
And why can't Nikon Camera Company give us cool looking apparel like Nikon Hunting Company?
Nikon must think you photo guys are a bunch of dorks and nerds

While we bearers of firearms are a bunch of cool dudes.
