Hi there,

I'm looking to buy an old Nikkor 300mm 2.8 lens. Cant really fork out the 7-8k needed for the newest one since it will be a rarely used lens.

I found this one for sale:

But the seller cant confirm if its the first 1977 version or the Ai-S version. The serial number is 613xxx and according to this site : <link removed> its the Ai-S version which was first released in 82.

Can anyone confirm which version it is based on the serial number?

Also, considering the condition; what would be a fair and a good price for this lens? The barrel shows some wear and the front glass has a couple nicks, but they dont show on the pictures according to the seller.

According to the website on the serial numbers it was built around 1984...thirty years old, almost. Problems may be in lubrication failure, fungus, or just failure due to use.

Before purchasing something like this (eBay about $1600) I personally would have to test it thoroughly, making certain it functions well, then only $1000-1200 USD. The photos of the lens look like this was an extremely used lens, a lot of wear on the mount as if it had been on and off hundreds of times.

And, your link to the item was broken so it was removed, and we generally do not use links for items for sale on NRF. Also, specific serial numbers are best kept to oneself, just FYI.

Oh it wasnt a link for a sale, it was just a link for the pictures for everyone to see the actual condition. Also, I am aware about the serial number thing, but I dont think it applies for such an obsolete and old lens because I cant see the interest.

The seller assure that the lens is working properly and that there is no apparent or functionnal issues with it.

So that would be the Ai-S version right? So if the seller is asking below 1000, I am assuming its a great price given that it's the Ai-S version?
