    I've been using a D90 and 5DMk2 over the weekend, and was shocked that the 5DMk2's viewfinder wasn't significantly better than the D90's. I would have expected the full frame finder to be much larger than it was. One of the reasons I love shooting with my FE, is the big bright viewfinder which helps so much to compose and focus, to which neither the D90 nor 5DMk2 could compare. Does anyone have experience with the D700/D3 and also the D90 or 5Dmk2 who could tell me how the viewfinder compares? According to the magnification numbers it seems they should be similar to the 5DMk2.

    I've looked through a D700's finder before and compared to my D300, it looks like a movie screen!

    Good to hear. I've never used a D300, but I imagine the viewfinder is similar to the D90?

    Pretty much similar. It's clear of etched in focal points like the D700's is.

    How's the D90 viewfinder compare to a D40x?
    I have been especially disappointed in the D40x ever since I made the mistake of looking through a Hasselblad H3DII :)

    D3 - 100% coverage
    D700 - 96% coverage

    in other words, if You've used Nikon f100 than it's gonna be more like D3, d700 will be little bit smaller, but still much bigger than this what You can get on and DX cameras.

    @gentoo - thanks, that's what I expected

    @monty11 - if the D40x is like the D60, which i believe it is, the D90's finder is MUCH better. Bigger and brighter, the pentaprism makes a big difference over the mirror, and I believe the magnification is higher.

    OT: Well the D40x looks like a keyhole ... I can't even use it for proper focussing. Now I'm soooo looking forward to a new camera :D

    @monty, I know what you mean. I use a katzeye focusing screen on my D60 because it's can be difficult to focus on it otherwise, a problem i don't have with bigger finders. The only problem with the katzeye is slow lenses making the center go dark.

    I had a D40x and now use the D3 and the viewfinders are...well...different. To put it mildly. I know the D700 is slightly smaller, but I honestly cant tell the difference when i used my buddies 700. Ive never used the D90 but even the D80 is much better than the D40.

    Going just slightly off topic, which viewfinder did the D5000 inherit, the D40\60's or the D90's? I was to distracted by the spiffy articulating screen to notice.

    In the pics I've seen, Id say its between a D90 and D40. But it can be deceiving in pics so who knows. I cant imagine its too great since they have seemed to focus on LV more than view finder in this camera. The video that shows the kids using it just goes to show that this is an entry level Dslr

    It's like the D40/D60s. Almost identical coverage and magnification, and it's a pentamirror, not prism. The D90s will remain far superior.
