It's a strech of the imagination, but I'd probably get the D700. Like you said with the Sony, only if they had CLS added and a Nikon flash mount.

So for me the Sony A850 with Nikon flash control
This is only a fun thread, this will newer happen, but hopeful we will see features from these dream camera migrate into future Nikon right, like the 24MP Sony sensor into the future D700 replacement

I actually would prefer the D3s ove the 5D MK2. Canon products really don't get me excited like a Nikon does.

Honestly, as bodies go, I'm all about the Nikon. Do this exercise... go to best buy and pick up the cheapest model of each brand. Once your done explaining to the sales person that "No, he can't help you today", give some thought as to which one feels right in your hand.
The cheaper Cannon's are absolutely atrocious. The Sony's are OK, but none of them has the ergonomics of the D40\D3000. And from there it only gets better!
If anything, I'd probably swap the chips around. What I really want is a small full frame camera with a consumer build - Think D700 meets D90.

Well fine... If your going to rigorously enforce the rules of your hypothetical thread, I suppose I'd like one of the M4/3 cameras with a F-Mount. :)
Mostly, I just want my gear to be smaller.
An F Mount on my iPhone... I'd go for that. I wonder if they could hack the focus ring to also scroll through my contacts...

Why are so many people talking about switching to another brand? (just wondering, hehe)
Nikon did a good job since the D3-D300 launch, so why would anyone change now?
The only reason to switch would be if you absolutely need 1080p video (=> 5dmkII, panasonics) but again just wait a few months and Nikon will probably present a D800-D400-D90s lineup with 1080p video, because users keep asking for that (not to mention the "market"). Indeed:
Low light => D3, D700, D3s
HD => D3x
HD movies => D5000, D90, D3s
cheap => D3000, D5000
There's a camera in each market slot. Of course, no camera fits in all the slots.
As we often say in my job (3D CG gfx business), one can only choose 2 points amongst 3, between:
- price
- time
- quality
Meaning I can work fast and cheap but the output will not be top notch, or cheap and beautiful but slowly, etc. :DI know it's very pleasing to talk about rumors and hypothetical brand announcements (hence I'm here), but it all seems to be a waste of time... or at least entertainment :D

Good question. Perhaps the new Canon 7D. I like the feel of that one. I played with one at Bestbuy and it has a nice D300 feel to it. If I could get that in a Nikon lens mount that would be cool.
