Is this what they said about Minolta?
where there’s smoke there’s forum fire
Exactly noxin. I've seen it happen to so many once strong companies that make very bad choices and it all comes crumbling down. Minolta was lucky that Sony wanted to enter the DSLR market. If Sony hadn't stepped in then Minolta (camera) would still be part of the Konica copier biznaz or completely dead. Well I guess technically they are dead and only exist now as a lens mount. I never want to see a dead Nikon become an "Apple" Fmount!!! Yikes!
Simple enough. I won't switch.
I'd switch if:
1. Nikon pisses me off at the point I want to switch :D
2. all my lenses were stolen or broken without any insurance
3. all my friends were switching
4. my job depended on it
5. Nikon were bought by Microsoft :D

You know, alpha would probably prefer that. And Willis could get his iPhone F-mount.
And they would be the only two happy about it.
NSX not even if Nikon were "dead"? You'd be that weird guy scavenging trash cans and landfills looking for Nikon parts for his D40 then right? lol :^)
The reason I completely moved away from canon was because they changed their lens mount (I had FD lenses). So I had to buy all new lenses anyway. I'm actually a full time Nikon user thanks to canon :^)
What would make me "switch" (I actually still use canon gear every now and then) would depend on price, feature set, and ergonomics.
The 7D is the most Nikon like canon I've seen. Had the D300 been more like a D200S, a slight upgrade to the original D200, then I would go for the 7D. Would I sell all of my Nikon gear? HELLS NO! I'd keep my gear as I have kept some of my old canon stuff.
I like photography regardless of brand. My loyalty and (for the most part) praise of Nikon comes from my experience with their outstandingly great "tools". I don't consider myself a fanboy but I'm not going to deny that Nikon makes some great camera gear! They have earned my (and everyone else's) respect through years of great products.
However, the moment the DSLR range turns into the COOLPIX range I'm gone! :^(
NikoDoby- probably, actually. Since upgrading a body is so expensive, I'll probably be only buying lenses from now on, and as long as my D40 keeps ticking, I'll keep shooting.
And also, if I go for a body, it'll probably be minimally a D90. So that's $1000 I can spend on a lens. I'd much rather get a 105 macro than a D90.
So the only way you'd switch from Nikon is to... switch to Nikon? You're no fun NSX, lol.

Very very well stated Niko! As photographers, we have to look at the tools we're offered and see if they'll work for us. I'm a Nikon user for pretty much the same reasons you are I think. Canon screwing around with their lens mount is one reason, perhaps the biggest, why I'm not with them now.
I agree with you as well about the 7D. That is very D300 like in it's feel. I loved how that camera felt. Instead of my D90, I seriously almost got a 40D and the 400mm5.6. Nikon needs to make a lens like this and fast or the sale of my D90 and the two lenses I know longer use could be in my future to get a 7D and that lens.
Well if you do switch to canon Gentoo you know we'll have to take away your mod sash right, ;^)
You'd still keep your D300, right, Gentoo? I think he could be a mod being a bi-brand user.
Niko, this is a very interested thread you started. I started reading this last night, and truly gave this some thought. The first question I asked myself was switch to what? My D300 already smokes any offering from Olympus (four thirds please), and Pentax. That leaves them out of the running. What about Sony, well they have a very young product line that needs some development. They have some nice lenses, but certainly don’t have the selection of Nikon or Canon. Their flash offerings are a joke, however in another five to seven years, I can truly see them as a force in the marketplace with products to compete with Canon or Nikon. Sony is one company that can truly reinvent itself.
This brings me to Canon. I will ignore their lens compatibility/ incompatibility issues, but that does play on my mind. Let me bring up three other threads you started, the first was the 7D D300 samples from Gizmodo, I found those 7D samples to be very soft compared to the D300, but attributed it to aggressive noise handling. Then there was the Darwin Wiggett thread you started this week which showed more soft images from that camera that could not be attributed to noise handling, and Darwin said himself “In this comparison the D300s easily wins in our opinion.” The third thread was “What's The Best Lens, Camera And Settings For Sports.” Although I never commented, I did notice the glaring absence of the 1DMark III. This camera was a disaster, and many who had sent their camera back to Canon to have the focus fixed swear they never got it right.
Personally I believe Canon has a problem with taking their prototypes into production. That focus issue should have been discovered in the prototyped phase, and should have never seen production. Who knows, maybe the Canon bean counters make last minute changes to save a few pennies before production, and all hell breaks loose. I am for giving Canon the Forrest Gump Award, Canon is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.
So to answer the question, Nikon really has to screw-up the product line and either Sony has to grow-up, or Canon has to turn in their Forrest Gump award.

I'm never giving up my D300! I love that camera. I would be a rare bi-brand user. In fact, I would likely be in the field with both. The Canon for the longer shots and small birds and the Nikon for everything else including scenery, landscapes, portraits etc.
Thanks Pabnj! It's good to know I'm not the only one who can't sleep at night thinking about such things :^)
I totally agree with your analysis. Sony has the potential of maturing into a worthy adversary and canon just needs to get it's "stuff" together.
My wife is actually my "psychiatrist" so part of her cure for me was to commit me here with like minded individuals, :^)
But now you've made me self conscious and I'll have to come up with even better topics to whack everyone's brains with :^)
Why switch? I mean ever. There have been times when Canon had an advantage, and (hopefully more) times when Nikon had it but never for too long.
I have been Nikon user for quite some time now and the only and most painful switch I ever made was from film to digital. I am still missing the times when my gear was up to date for a decade or two instead of a year or two as with digital.
Sony looks tempting lately until you actually put it in your hand but they are learning and I suppose that, if Nikon and Canon are not watching, they will evolve to be a leading company that may eventually make me reconsider my opinion.
I can only imaging switching to the Leica S2 if I had huge money, or to a quality rangefinder system. I used F3HP for years and then got a Contax G2 which I used more often. I doubt I'd get rid of my Nikon's because SLRs are better for macro and long lens work.

That's exactly what the Canut couple said before. They have always been die hard canon groupies. That's what makes it so shocking. That and the fact that they are wildlife/bird shooters and supposedly those types of shooters prefer canon. Like I said they seemed kinda reluctant to admit it so I didn't want to keep asking them questions as to why they were switching. I only asked one or two questions and kinda moved on from there.
Besides, I spit my beer out of my nose when they said they were switching so that was already kinda awkward :^)
NikoDoby, if I absolutely absolutely had to switch, I'd probably go to the GF1. I like its smaller size, and to be honest, it's not a horrible camera. The fact that it's smaller also makes it more likely I'll have it on me when I do see something nice to photograph. I hate the logistics of carrying a DSLR. What lens I'll need, what filters I might need, what bag I should bring- I usually like carrying a Jansport backpack to put the D40 in, much more low key than a Lowepro bag. If I go to a museum that needs a bag check (for backpacks) and prohibits photography as well, I'd need to leave my DSLR in the bag check room- absolutely the worst combination ever, because I don't trust the security in a bag check room.
However, I could probably fit a GF1 in a messenger's bag, and some museums allow that, but not a backpack.
SWITCH ....????
No No, I think I will always like girls.
I owe Nikon big time, I am having so much fun with my D90 that even if they remove the shutter button and make it voice activated ...I'll be obliged to buy it.
For those of you that said you would switch, I've got my eye on you ...and my back to the wall.
