I just got in touch with a Nikon user I know that I hadn't seen in a while. Well he got rid of his D200 and lenses and switched over to the canon 5Dmk2 :^( He wanted to go full frame and didn't like the D700 (Yeah I know, WTF?!) He's a great photographer and had been a loyal Nikon user for many years. It really surprised me that he switched.

But then, get this, I also found out that another long time die hard Canut couple I know is switching to Nikon! They're putting their 1Dmk3's up for sale and placed an order for some D3Ss! They were very disappointed in the specs of the 1Dmk4 so they're not upgrading. Now this shocked me even more so because they have been crazy loyal canon users for many years!

So what would make you switch sides? Honestly, don't tell me "I'll never switch" because all of us "have a price".

I switch to my D300 from Canon 40D, simply to get better AF performance, It is expensive to switch, but I don't regret

What would make me switch? I have no idea. If they gave out free ƒ/2.8 lenses? Maybe...

I've not considered switching so much but for a while I was thinking of adding a Canon body and lens to what I have. Being a wildlife and telephoto shooter, Canon just has a better lens selection. Most birders shoot with Canons.

Now as for actually switching; what would make me switch is if Nikon stopped keeping up with the latest technology. If Nikon were to stagnate, I would lose interest after a while. My D300 is awesome but eventually it will be outdated and obsolete. If this happens and Canon makes great strides forward while Nikon caters to the simplest common denominators, they will be left behind.

I am a Nikon fan, I like the ergonomics, the menus and the software despite how buggy it can be. Nikon also adds lots of nice features that are there if you want them. You have choices. Canons are designed a little screwy but not retarded like Sony's so I could switch to Canon if I was pushed.

Whatever alpha, that's exactly the attitude the Canut couple had...until they switched! The low ISO performance of the D3S sold them. They felt the 1Dmk4's high ISO range was pure marketing while the D3S's was the real thing. They mostly shoot wildlife/birds so I was very shocked. They were kinda embarrassed to even admit it after defending canon for so many years. So I down played it and told them it's not the camera it's the photographer...which in all actuality is the truth.

What am I supposed to say? If I switched, I'd have nothing. As long as I stick with Nikon at least I have a few "lenses."

If I ever do decide to switch, then I'll have my reason. But since I'm not switching now, I'd don't know why I'd switch.

So if your dad hands you down his 7D and two or three lenses then you'd tell him no.

whn I had my D80 and 18-200 I was considering to swap it for canon 5dmk1

thn I tried it... my hands were burning for how uncomfortable controls were so

so Im happy Nikon user and no crying here

can you ask your mate Niko what exactly he didnt like about d700 ? I think its the best camera for the money : ) at the moment

Since I don't make money from photography and thus don't have to keep up with the latest bodies, it would take a lot for me to switch. I'm used to Nikon's cameras, and I own a few lenses, plus my parents also use Nikon. If I did switch, I don't know if it would be Canon, since Pentax and Sony have quite impressive pricing (have to afford the switch somehow). To be honest, though, I really haven't thought about it. I use Nikon because my parents do, and there's really no reason for me to switch.

I don't even know what would make me switch, I can't really think of anything that would be worth more than the cost of switching to me.

I'm actually with Shade here. I've got four siblings and my dad that all shoot Nikon, so it's a big gear pool that I'd lose out on by switching. But if I had to name conditions they would be:
-Canon switching to f-mount (aren't they about due to screw their users again anyway? It's been, what, 20 years?)
-better low light performance than Nikon
-improved menu system and button layout
-a Nikon bankruptcy

Don't you think that beer company will save the day, I think you had something about how large the the family of companies was. Or you would not think that someone would want to get their hands on Nikon if the chance was presented to them

Not if they turn into a Saturn/Opel that nobody wants. Or worst they could become the next Pentax! Just take a look at Leica and how they totally screwed up the transition to digital. They're still not out of the woods yet.

Whose to say Nikon can't go in a different direction with some new technology than what the market wants? What if they get it wrong like Leica?

But we will all do our best to direct them right and let them know if they are starting to screw up, I still think Nikon have made it to digital very well and next thing is moving to video

Then again maybe some day it will be canon, so Niko you win either way

Mostly the "wrong" things I'm sure, You know if I worked at the higher level at Nikon I could really drive everyone crazy here at NR with all kinds of rumors

He liked the 21megapixels versus 12 for the price difference and the 1080HD video even though he admits he'll never use it much. He also said the autofocus of the 5Dmk2 was just as good as the D200 so it wasn't an issue for him.

Hey, this is why I switched to NIKON!!!!

It would take a lottery win to get me to switch. Changing lenses would send me to the poor farm, and divorce court.
