    Hey folks:

I dabble a little in macro work and was thinking about getting the R1C1 Speedlight set-up. It's a $900 investment here in Canada. For that type of money I'm hoping to be able o use it for other applications but I'm concerns that the GN is only 10. Does anyone use this setup for anything other than macro?

You can shave a few bucks off by getting the R1 kit if you already have a SB800 or 900 flash unit and/or a cls commander compatible camera.
You can use the SB-R200 flash guns as remote units for background lighting for example so yes there is use beyond macro only for it. You gotta be creative with the Nikon creative lighting system ;)

Actually isn't the commander quite useful as it gives you quicker access to controlling the output of the flashes?

The SU-800 commander unit allows you to easily set a flash output ratio between Groups A and B (1:1, 1:2, ...etc)and this is not so easily possible without the SU-800 with other CLS solutions but it is still possible.

That's what I thought. So then I guess getting it depends on Newfie's needs. I personally think that makes it totally worth it.
