LOL at the D90 comment.
Since some don't like non-photo stuff on the forum I'm just trying to making it relevant that's all :^)
There are a lot of airplane buffs around here.
How else were you planning on visiting me? :^)
Road trips are a lot more photogenic, Niko.
This is insane. Remind me to avoid Honduras.
Imagine siting in this plane ride. Now imagine Bernard's your pilot! 8^*
Yep ! That was me all right ! Not easy to hold a D300+70-200 with one hand and land a 747 with the other !!! :oD
Seriously now, some of these videos are amazing, but rather than try to land in strong gusting cross winds, I'd rather divert to another airport !…
Some of these pilots are really good, but I would never land at places like these, nor fly some of these airlines (No name quoted) !…
Thanks Niko ! That was… interesting ! :o)
I thought you'd enjoy it Bernard :^) The French Alps runway is the craziest!
Oh and here's a different angle of Lukla (takeoff and landing)
I wonder if most photographers have an interest in aviation! I actually have studied flying myself, mainly in General Aviation Aircraft. I use X-Plane 9 as my simulator, though it's slow on my computer. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable, especially with navigation. I know how to program a GPS or FMS, and VORs, ADFs, and ILSs are a breeze. I currently use an accurately-designed Cirrus SR22 most of the time, as well as many Piper aircraft.
Thanks for the videos Niko—those were fun :^)
Et tu, adamz? Video on NR forum?
Oh come on mb it's still photo related. They were all shot with a "prototype D90" ;^)
Hey Guys, From a Military pilots point of view on landings, here is by far the bravest or stupidist landing in history. Now bear in mind, I have landed on a carrier in f-18 hornet, no easy task, but do-able.
These guys in this video either deserve a medal or a nice padded cell. This takes skills and very big Balls.
I forgot to mention for those that aren't up to speed on Military Aircraft, Thats a C-130 transport aircraft, it was never designed to land on a carrier. Has no arrester Hook, and barely fits on the deck.
Actually, you are right. Landing any plane on a moving postage stamp in the middle of the ocean has to be scary particularly when you go full throttle at touchdown.
mb - c'm nobody is perfect :) I couldn't resist this lukla airstrip, as I'm planning to go there next year
Give adamz some slack! It's easy to be bad when there aren't moderators hovering over you ;^)
I've taken a plane to Kai Tak Airport when I was 1, I guess that doesn't really count there....
But I have taken a plane in 2005 to Hong Kong again, but this time to HK International Airport.
Hong Kong is awesome, for you guys who haven't gone yet.
Too bad I didn't have my DSLR in 2005 though. That'd be awesome. One of the worst things that happened to me in Hong Kong was my Kingston SD card failed on me. And that was my only card. For some odd reason, the folder hierarchy got all messed up. I would be able to view one set of files on the camera, but when I pop in the card into a reader, I'd find a completely different set of files and see different photos from being on the camera. At one point I just decided to go for broke and delete the whole folder and quickly cancel it to see what happens. I recovered 3/4 of all the photos I could see only in the camera.
Not horrible, but I'd prefer if I got all my photos, thank you very much.
Thanks again for these new videos ! That Twin Otter is a beautiful plane that is quite able to do that kind of landings.
I love the Hercules landing on the carrier and the landing too !!! Remember Doolittle's Raiders taking off in B-25's from the carrier Hornet ? That was quite something, with a load of bombs too and a lot of gas. These guys were very very brave indeed. Hank Potter, who was Doolittle's Navigator was a member of the CAF French WIng until he passed away a few years ago. These guys were real heroes !
Ooops ! I meant landing and take-off for the C-130. Sorry…
