Our Photo-a-day really needs to be worked on

I have tried to post on our Photo-a-day and I really think this area have to be made better. Take a look at how it is done on DpReview for starters. We have a mixture of topics, picture size and comments and they are at time completely un-related to any of the pictures in this posts, Yes I have done that myself

Anyway here is an idea, and I don't know how hard this would be to implement, Sorry Admin

Keep having a monthly Photo-a-day, open posting
Have a challenge, monthly or like DpReview a max post limit
Have a specific size requirements limit
Thread will only show pictures: each picture have a drop down addition that can show picture information and comments made about picture

I don't know if this can be done with current Web design software, but I do think this would make the picture posting more interesting

I've never been a huge proponent of "A photo a day". However, within this section I have thought about some of the suggestions made. I think the 800 pixel wide limit works. I realize that most of mine are exactly that although a few may have been 900. Basically keep it under 1000 pixels wide with the sweet spot at 800.

Should we keep it at photos only, does this mean that no one will be allowed to comment on pics? If so, how will this be controlled and by who's standards? If comments won't be allowed, bye bye photo a day thread.

In addition, I also think we should have another photo posting sticky thread. The same size limits should apply but this one would be less rigid. We can post as many pics in there as we want and have discussions in there. After all, what's the use of a photography forum if we cannot discuss actual pictures? The photo a day will be just that, 1(one) photo a day by a member and little else. This will keep that forum tidy.

This will keep coming up until NRF gets rules up in place. I guess this is all my fault this time since I posted that NASA picture of the Apollo 17 landing site :^(

You can add comments to pictures they are in a drop down menu, like if you look at pictures on flickr, it could also incl picture info

I just think the pictures would flow better, and be more interesting to look at, now there can be most of a page with hardly any pictures, just on-line chat

I haven't followed the whole story on that subject, but why not have a proper gallery and an email address where photos could be sent to Admin for example ? The latter would then put the photos in the gallery himself. I don't know if this site can allow for that kind of arrangement, but it would solve all the problems experienced so far.

I honestly think that pictures should be in their own threads and sorted by category. This is the only "photo" forum that I've seen throw everyone's photos all in one huge messy pile.

For example, I could of just started a thread on the Apollo17 photo and everyone could have just commented on that thread only or added their own Moon pictures there.

Another thing that bothers me about the photoaday is that once a page is "turned" pictures are pretty much "lost". If I want to see a particular photo of Gentoo's bird again then I have to go digging around 10 or so pages until I find it!

Bernard that could work but admin's got enough on his plate already. Besides I wouldn't want to "hand over" my files to someone else. Besides it wouldn't be fun if I had to wait a day or perhaps two before my picture gets posted.

But how about a best of the month or top 5 photos of the month? On second thought we'd probably see the same 5 people "winning" over and over.

You know Niko that is why I started this post and it has been talked about before, yes, one week from now, how do I find your Nasa picture or other pictures of the Moon

Photo entries should be an area like Wiki, you enter that area and we can start new interest challenges: like the Moon, water droplets, Gentoo's bird pictures, Adamz wild life pictures etc. This way you can find them at a later time, I think this will also encourage new posters to submit a picture

Like my post: photo posting on NR has to be worked on, and if done could become great

Niko makes a great point. This is why I said that if we keep with the PAD thread and make it as photos only, we should offer an alternative, perhaps several if necessary where other pictures and discussions can take place. I personally loved the fact that Niko was able to shot the flag on the moon. I just didn't comment on it due to the shit storm it created.

For a good example of how this works, I once again refer you to city-data forums. They have a photography forum larger than most photography websites. Just look at all the categories they have and how many post are in them:

Gentoo don't you mean dyslexic rather? Jonny you don't think I could have taken that Apollo17 shot with my Mickey Mouse camera and a home built telescope made out of empty toilet paper rolls taped together ;^)

If you did, you've got my vote for designing the next Nikkor telephoto offerings. Yours sound pretty inexpensive and you can't argue with those kind of results.

How about we make this a flickr pool?

EDIT: That way every photo will have its own set of comments, like many of you suggested. That will also clear up navigation. Oh, and it will use Flickr so no more fumbling with trying to embed photos in the forum.

This ain't flickr...and thank God it ain't DpReview......keep it simple and keep it sweet.......trust me ...disorganized brains....such as the one that rests in my noggin holder...love this format. ;^)
