The first reviews coming out suggest this is a really, really great camera and as for the 6D release, I bet Nikon had a party when the specs of that were confirmed.

My only gripes now rest with the UK price, and maybe, just maybe depending on how much it really matters real world, the AF system and its bunched up points. Spread those chaps out a bit and have the UK price more representative of the US price and surely you've got an absolute stormer of a camera. High ISO samples look terrific.

Great, that does the trick, I don't think I would have found that option (although it's f5 on the 600, I wonder what command they removed?)

Now I just have to get used to the zoom buttons.

The reversal of the zoom buttons is baffling, but it looks like it was from moving the ISO button down to the bottom. (they swapped ISO/zoom- with QUAL/zoom+) You think they could have just swapped one of each button function. (made the bottom one ISO/zoom+) ??

As far as menus, I would dig into each and every custom item and see what it does. "Easy ISO" is one of my favorites on the D7000, but it's not a super obvious option. For aperture priority and shutter priority, it allows tweaking the ISO with just a dial spin (no button hold required...) I'm hoping the D600 has some similar hidden coolness.

Just got my D600 earlier this morning. So far, I've put it through some tests and the handling seems ok (I still have some menu settings to play with though). Some annoyances (since I am used to my D90): they switched the zoom-in and zoom-out, and you can't use the rear wheel to scroll through images unless you're zoomed in. I think issues like that make it difficult to use both at the same time, so I might be "forced" to get a D7000. Oh well.

Anyway, autofocus seems fine, the AF sensors do cover a small area but I haven't found it to be a big deal so far. The AF seems to work pretty well in lower light, certainly much better than my D90.

Again, haven't noticed any color casts on the LCD (it seems pretty accurate when comparing to the original source), but since the screen is supposed to be the same as the D800, it might just be something I can't see.

I'll have to look at the images to comment more on the high iso quality, and I'll need to upgrade my photoshop to work with the raw files, so I don't have any comments on IQ.

I completely agree with your post. Also coming from a D90, some of the current controls are backwards from what we're used to. The playback button from D90 is now the menu and I actually keep accidentally pressing the menu to check out the photos...

Great DxOMark scores for the D600. ISO 3200 should be clean and ISO 6400 usable. If you can shoot sports without needing a faster fps rating, the D600 should work well. Also, it should be great for landscapes. It looks like the D600 will be an overall winner for Nikon. You can increase the robustness of the build by adding the Nikon battery grip which has a magnesium back, bottom and front. The D600 already has a magnesium top and back so adding the battery grip creates a large metal C frame.

Yes Indeed the D600 settles in nicely at third on the DXO list! That now means that Nikon owns 5 of the top 7 spots on the list including 4 of the top 5. 2012 has certainly been the year of the Nikon :))

And three of those Nikon cameras (D800e, D800, D600) rank ahead of the top four medium format cameras! How many Nikons in the top 10? Six. How many Canon's in the top 10? Zero. I would say Nikon scores a knockout against Canon. Very impressive.

It is fairly impressive. I thought once I saw the sample pics that it was going to be performing fairly well.

*goes to start collecting change from the couch and in my console in the car ;-)*

Two things I already noticed that I like over the D7000...

    1) I can switch Auto ISO on or off using the second dial without going into the menu now.

    2) Auto ISO has a feature that will adjust the minimum shutter speed based on focal length.

Which doesn't leave much I'll have to adjust in menus anymore. I'm very happy about this!

This sounds like a fantastic feature. Tell us more. How does it work?

Awesome. On the D7000, I have the Fn button set to first item in the "my menu" list, which is set to Auto ISO on/off. it would be great to have this a dial or button feature so I can use the Fn button for something else.

And the min shutter/focal length thing, that is outstanding.

I actually do this too :)

It's actually adjustable! By default it'll use a 1:1 shutter speed to focal length ratio and increase the ISO to maintain it and prevent blurry shots. You can set it slower and faster. I messed with the next fastest setting after default and it seems to go to 2:1.

None of my FX lenses have VR so I don't know if it factors that in or not but maybe I'll give it a whirl with a DX lens tomorrow. For now I need to sleep :)

Well I bought one. BestBuy had them in stock and after I used it for a bit I decided a camera now was better than a camera later. Anything is a step up from my D70! Ill soon be showing myself in PAD.

lol!!! D800 is the same way - Not sure who screwed that one up over at Nikon. After almost 4 months I am still not used to it.

The D600 is Pretty Impressive. @rensuchan - Does it have AF fine tune?
For many this may be a better choice than the D800.... Nice job Nikon.

It seems to work really well on my D800 - one thing to watch is that it tends to go a bit high on VR shots and actually seems to ignore VR is on the lens and bases it off of focal length. On my 70-300vr I actually drop it 2 settings from the middle and then it handles it the way I want it to. I actually go up one step for 1.4/1.8s - That seems to work a bit better. 2.8s I leave it in the middle.

The D600 is now £1600 on Amazon UK. That didn't take long!

    Tempted now...

I'm glad to hear that, Postman. What were they thinking with that initial UK price?

Something very, very silly I imagine.

I've gotten my brother to hide my wallet, I need to stay strong and wait until early next year, I think the mythical D400 is what I really, really want...

If I really need to spend money in the meantime, there's always the 24-70 f2.8.

Recently I've realised I work for Nikon, I mean I don't work for Nikon, but I work to spend money on Nikon...

For all those screaming about the omission of the "AF-ON" button from the D600 (found on the D700, D800, etc) - reading the manual, I noticed they added this to the available choices when assigning the Fn button. Nice!

Epic fail on the time lapse. I set it to take a shot every 30 seconds for 1 minute instead of 1 hour. I walked away as soon as it started so I didn't notice until it should have been done...

Luckily there are many more sunrises coming up. Ill try for a sunset tonight. :)

Indeed Fine Tune is there. Hopefully I wont have a need to use it, I only found AF to be a problem on the D7000 when using AF-A rather than AF-S.

I guess I renege on my unnecessary statement about the success of the D600...
