@Squamish so much latitude, and it really is amazing what the D800 does for the shadows even at high ISO. :)

Another shot in another ruined building at Baldpate Mountain... instead of circling through the ruined farm the way I have in the past, I went the other direction and found an entrance I had missed before! I wanted to finish the roll of ISO 50 film in my F5, and I wanted shots from inside the ruins, so I had to let it sit on a two minute exposure here while I poked around nearby.

I saw a few people trying to do what I was doing, I looked at their gear and where they were setting up and told them "if you value you gear, I would not be where you are standing." They moved and came and joined me where I was and started to ask me how to go about taking picture of the waves. Needless to say, I helped them out. All they Knew was...i put it in "Auto and shoot." :P

    Nice shots all!

    Vino, yikes! Poor Heron.

Well I'm a chef believe it or not. We had a big fancy wedding expo. It ended with fire dancers. I have never tried a shot like this. Came out OK I guess. I used funny settings since I cranked up ISO to 3200. I only had my 90mm Macro lens at F3.2 and I was using spot metering so this big flame cranked me up to 1/2500th.. go figure? Sorry for blinding you...

Coastal, nice one. shooting fire, particularly this type because of the dynamic range, is difficult. What kind of cuisine?
    Nice variety of shots all!

Awesome shot coastalconn. Love the light, his gesture and the details in the flame that were brought out by the short exposure.
You should ask the guy whether you can hire him for a creme brûlée.

    Stunning. Is Jefferson a volcano?

I've just got Lightroom and I'm absolutely gobsmacked at what I'm able to pull from previously discarded images.

Here is Mt. Ngauruhoe taken from Mt. Ruapehu, New Zealand. Both mountains are active volcanos. Ngauruhoe stood in for Mt. Doom in the LOTR films. I've mentioned that several times before on here, but what the hell, I'm a total NZ geek now.

    Ngauruhoe from Ruapehu

Funnily enough, if any one here has seen any of Bear Grylls' latest shows, he films two episodes in NZ. In the north island episode he spends a section of the show scrambling around a volcanic desert looking for water, he drops down a dangerous valley to a stream in order to drink some (what turns out to be highly poisonous) water. You get the impression he's in the middle of nowhere, but in reality he's just down here. And where I am is maybe a 10 minute walk from the car, parked at a ski field car park behind me!

SquamishPhoto: I notice how in many of your portraits the far side eye is not in focus. I find that distracting and unnatural. A shallow f-stop can give a nice halo effect to a portrait but when it defocuses one of the subjects eyes I find it weakens the impact of the photo.

Others here may have different opinions but how many on NR think a portrait should have both of the subjects eyes in focus, especially when that subject is looking at you? I see a lot here that do not and it always makes me think the photo would have more impact if I saw two sharp eyes.

    Just a thought.

Ahh...the compromise... most likely on the photo by Sqaumish need f/8 or better to get the DOF to pull all eyelashes into sharp focus..... 3+ stops... or ISO 5,000.....

But, the photo would be an entirely different shot...the elusiveness of the hair in soft focus may be a very important part of the seduction of this shot. And, the model is IMO saying something besides "Hi glad to see you".

So, would it be better with the eyes both sharp... I tend to try and have the near eye sharp and let the back eye soft. Most likely, I would have shot this side shot at f/4, but this would not have made a big difference, the back eye would still be less than perfectly sharp.

So, Maybe, Donald, you can get a nice model, set up your shot, eyes sharp, and show us. I think when I allow a photo on PAD, I have a clear idea of what it is. Like today is whimsy..... mmmm....but I guess the eyes are sharp at f/1.4....
