   A couple years ago My local Camera Club almost died, we where not getting any new members and it was just a matter of time. So I suggested that we all invited a friend to become a member. Now we have grown, actually if we keep growing we might need a larger meeting place.

   Anyway I think NR will only get to be great if we get it to grow larger, I think we need 10,000+ members. Then there will more people to share your interest, Gentoo will not be the only one shooting Birds, Soap will have more fans of buying used and I will have other fans of sports. I think Niko would still be on his own though

   So if we all invited friends to join, I think we could get the ball rolling and before you no it there will be 10,000 plus members. Yes we will loose the small family feeling, but we will gain more knowledge and inputs from a larger member base

   So include a link to NR in your e-mails, tell your friends about NR, tell them to check out NR before jumping in and buying that Canon, Sony or other Camera

   That's all folks

   Great idea, Pete. Niko can't be helped, though (too many blows to the head with the tripod).
   I think what the admin did on the blog is a good idea. I don't think people really think about it, but that post should get their attention.

   Fine. Let's say I invite friends. You know what they'll do? They'll make an account, and take a look around for a couple days, and then that'll be it.

   I'm completely for the idea, except that I think that the people who will actually actively contribute are those who found [NR] themselves and decided to join themselves. Like us.

   Photography-wise, I'm very lonely. That's why I joined [NR]. There's nobody my age who's as committed as I am. I haven't even met many adults who are.

   Is it really worth it that I recommend [NR] to friends?

   Rex - you probably know your friends fairly well. Don't invite the guy that lives and breaths football. Invite only those who live for photography. If we all do that, we won't end up with innumerable inactive accounts on NR.

   That is right we invite people with Camera Interest, like I did for members of my Local Camera Club, Matter of Fact I am going to place a link to NR on our Web Site, I hope that it is actual OK with NR to place links. Although most from my club are Canon Fans, there are a few with Nikon Gear, incl 2 Nikon fans from work

   We already done something in our photo magazine, but adding the link to our web site would be better. Will see to it. I presume, as most our readers and visitors are mostly photo and more specifically Nikon enthusiast, it will do the trick.
   Do we have a goal, how many active members?

    The more total members the more active members right, what about NR mass e-mailing current NR members every month to keep members informed, with the latest site update, news etc. With the member option to sign out

    Thanks for the NR support everybody! To be honest, I am afraid of making this forum too big - it may just turn like dpreview. I know I want to grow the forum but things can get out of control very easy. I kind of like this atmosphere - members know each other, like a big family, ok maybe not but you get the idea:) We have to do a very careful moderation if and when we get to 10,000 members.

    I like it this way too. You get to know the active users well, and it's a tight knit community. When a lot of people join and start posting, every day the front page of the forum will have completely new topics and it'll be difficult to pick up and old one while contributing to new ones.

    Yes we are getting to know each others, but we are also lacking enough members to get certain things to happen and to find other members with similar interest. But you most admit a few things have happened lately that can only help to grow without loosing control, the extra mods and hopeful some posting rules getting listed

    No I don't want it to become like DpReview, I used to post there but now find it very hostile and filed with nasty people. I sometimes wonder if they even have any photographic interest besides being camera gear know-it-all's

    As I was saying for ages this forum engeen can not handle large community just because its not designed for it.... the sooner admin will start looking else where the better
    my advice based on pre experience
    phpBB - easy and free
    SMF(simple machine forum) - free and even easier (the one I switched to for community site that Im running)
    vbulleting - most powerful but its not free

    you can not grow on something that we have jsut because its not unfriendly and doesn't look very structured

    Personally, I like the BBPress look. All the other forums look exactly the same, yet [NR] is so...unique.

    But nau's right. It can't handle a large crowd. So let's not ask for one and keep our small, tight-knit community.
