Wow I think dpreview just set a new record for posting a full review of a recently released camera!
Yes it was fast, but the camera did move into a new area of APS-C format right
Pete
Not sure what you mean?
The highest MP count and somehow maintaining great ISO performance. I think the sample looks great and hope this will give Nikon/Sony if they supply the sensor, some thing to aim for
Pete
Kind of off topic but reading the 7D review made me look back at the D300/700 reviews. Why did dpreview give the D300 an 8.5 for ergonomics & handling but gives the D700 a 9.5?!
One little button takes the score down a whole point?!
Since 7D is still comes with APS-C, I don't think the its ISO beyond 1600 would be good.
The features in 7D looks very impressive but I don't think it helps to improve the image quality. So don't buy camera just because of high resolution but get better lenses and improve your photographing skills and techniques.

I think that rating system has to be renewed they are not consistent in how they give out their points and the IQ rating does not make sense if you look back a few years, like is a 9.0 rating 5 years ago the same as 9.0 is today

Why is the Canon 7D named like the 5D but has close to nothing in relation to it, as in not FF?
Why couldn't they name it 60D, or 70D?
Geniuses!
Because 7D sound better than 60D would have been, Canon has always been good with using numbers, to make something look better on paper than the same from other brands
Pete
The Canuts seem to think that the 7D is NOT a replacement for the 50D and that a 60D will still happen. They also think a full frame 3D is coming next year. So good luck trying to group the 3D, 60D, 7D, and 5D if it's all true.
What is the point of a 60D, the FF 3D makes more sense
Pete
The logic is that the 7D is too expensive to replace the 50D. So they are expecting a metal bodied 60D priced at $1200USD.
I don't believe in the 3D. It would sound too much like the D3. Or a 3D camera as in three dimensional Kodak or Fuji camera.
Welcome to the forum pcraigs :^)
I still can't believe one little button would knock a whole point off the D300's score?! So if that were true then should the D300S get the point back? :^)
The reason that Canon launching the 7D is very simple! It is business strategy! Before 7D, there isn't any model that can compete head to head against the excellent & well respected DX format Nikon D300. When Nikon launched the Nikon D300s, it further take away the DX (APS-C)market share. The Canon 50D is too weak to compete against D300. Canon knew that if they launch Canon 60D (with video mode), it will be total failure! Therefore Canon came out the "impressive" technical features 7D which is another Canon SLR category. At least 7D shows a higher resolution, HD video 1080, dual processor than 300s that might attract people to get it. But at the end of the day, the end result count which is the photo quality. I still believe D300s has better image quality than 7D due to its excellent performance at higher ISO.
Anyway, you can disagree with my view.

For me the D300(s) gives me a better value in AF performance and the way it controls my SB 900 flash, but if you look at the DpReview test you have to admit that Canon has done a great job at getting extra IQ and ISO performance from that new 18MP sensor
Pete
Lets hope this will give Nikon a push to get the next D400/500 on the market ASAP
