Whatever you guys decide to do for now ...is OK with me...and no offense, but I think that all of you mods need to be onboard....mod fights are a hell of alot worse than forum fights in general.
Should The Photo-A-Day Thread Be For Pictures Only?

shutterfdancer - there's no mod fight at all, and this thread is the best proof for this

I think we should have a least 4 categories for posting picture
Wild life: birds etc (not Niko having a party)
Scenery
Portraits
And for me Sports
Just my five cents, and you can only post one picture in each category per day, and yes we should be allowed to comment good or bad

I don't post much in PAD, but when I do, I do it mostly for sharing purposes only. We all need inspiration for our photographs from one source or another. I know that I get some inspiration from photos posted in PAD. Surely i mostly shoot portraiture and street, but inspiration comes from many types of photography for me. I am just sharing so we can all learn from each other.
If somebody comments them that's cool and appreciated. I don't necessarily like how some posters in PAD threads comment for the sake of commenting.

Welcome to the People's Republic of NR...
...ooopss sorry LOL

I think categories are needed or very soon the Photo-a-day will have 1000+ posts per month, and I hope that we grow, but it might be easier to grow if we split in categories
What about a Photo Challenge:
In my local camera club we have a monthly challenge: IR photography, B&W, macro, long exposure etc at the start of the year we suggest challenges for the next year
Just an idea

I like the category suggestion. Of course I'd be one lonely dude where the birds are posted LOL

haha! Alpha I got my 300F4, the main one I use for birds on ebay for just $450. There are some good deals on lenses there.

Really? Let's see what I can find...
Personally I would love to get a __-200 ƒ/2.8 right now. Preferably one of the AFS, but I'll probably ending getting the older one when I can save up enough.

Poop no good deals :^(

Hi Gentoo: there are lots of wildlife posts, I think the sports category would be a bit lonesome, but you know we could all try to shoot something for the other category, try to learn something new
What about the monthly challenge, I will make it a new post

I do, what I do for myself first and foremost. I attempt people shots whenever anyone wants to be a subject. Birds are my thing. They were my thing long before photography was so that will not change lol

I vote for tigers category :)
but seriously, You wouldn't be alone in the birding, as I have some spare bird shots in my library.

I don't know how much work it would be to do the following:
Have a separate gallery for pictures where people can comment and ask questions right under the pictures (no grades though), one person would be limited to one photo a day. Perhaps the gallery front page would display thumbs with usernames and dates.
Categories from a local site:
Abstract, nude, architecture, digital manipulation, fauna, humour, landscapes, macro, black-and-white, panorama, portrait, reportage, sports, failures, still life, varia. There are perhaps some gallery templates that could be used or maybe the code isn't that complicated to write.

Did anyone else notice that out of 32/33 post on page 4 of the Nov09 photoaday only 6 were actual photos?! One photo was mine that I later went back and added so it's actually only 5 photos out of 30 some post?!
I think if we split the photoaday into categories it would help a lot. I'm not sure about having a nude section though. I'm afraid Gentoo might go all out crazy and start posting self portraits more often then he would cardinals in a bird section :^)
I like monty's idea of a failure section,LOL. That would fill up real quick! And alphanikonrex would finally have a reason to actually contribute something! ;^) Just kidding alpha!I think we should have an off topic section for those who want to simply chit chat about whatever topics they want. It seems some want to talk about everything but the topic they are posting in.

Hmm a bit late in joining this topic.. But I like the off topic(maybe more like no topic) nature of the photo a day. I enjoy reading the comments. And yes I think a new thread should be created if the discussions get long. but it feel natural. I think a little nudge that a new thread should be created should be more than enough to get it created.
A little critique is fine but I think the PAD is not really for critique. Its more a "see I took an interesting picture!". Photos threads where the poster ASKS for critique is where the critiques should be posted.
We have many levels of skill and experience here. I would not expect a Club level chess player to play at the level of a grandmaster. Critique of grandmaster level games can go to many paragraphs on subtle elements of position and pawn structure and move order which in a club level game would not even warrant comment. similarly Photos here are of many levels and comments should be generally to encourage the poster. We all enjoy photography and we can all see what the poster wants to share in his/her picture and we share in the joy of that creation.
So I think we should give more detailed critique only if asked. On the other hand do not take it personally when someone suggests ways to improve your "masterpiece" that you spent hours adding your soul into its creation. They are only trying to be helpful(the uncultured bafoon! lol). Me I have a thick skin, critique away on my photos I welcome it!

So, am I allowed to ask someone how they took a certain shot? Or at least what the technique is called so I can google it? I would really like to know more about JohnnyApple's tree shot from PAD.
Also, I am learning and have no person to teach me. If I post a picture on PAD I am hoping for critique, I guess I assumed that was part of the deal with the thread because I have seen it before. But if not (or maybe you guys are afraid of making the stay-at-home-mom cry), I guess I could just ask for it. But at the same time, I don't want to ask for something if it is outside the norm for a photo posting thread. Forgive my ignorance, NR is my first forum experience...ever.

I'm flattered, Jessi. I took that shot with a slow shutter speed (1/10 s) and then I zoomed while the shutter was open. I set a 2 second timer delay for the shutter so that I could push the shutter release and then concentrate on zooming smoothly (the lens was a 17-50mm). I'm pretty sure this was on a tripod, but I might have been able to hold it at 1/10. I saw a shot like this of a big crowd of people on the BBC and went out to copy it. I didn't have a big crowd of people, though.
I guess what I was getting at with my comment earlier in this thread is that there aren't rules posted anywhere about PAD threads, so I think people will be confused about it (I know I was/am). If the purpose was clearly defined I think more people would participate.

Awesome, thank you!
I agree with your second paragraph too. Hopefully that is what this thread is moving towards.

NR will keep on growing and before you know it the monthly photo-a-day will have 1000+ posts, split into categories. Less active categories could maybe be a 2 month thread

Seriously this is the tamest forum I've ever been on, but then again it's the smallest. As we grow there will be problems such as people not getting along, not agreeing. I'm already starting to see that creep up around here unfortunately.

If the purpose was clearly defined I think more people would participate. That's why I started this thread. How can I, as a mod, slap people on the back of the head for "talking" too much on the photoaday? I can't because there are no rules that say you can't. A lot of the "hurt" feelings and "angry" comments have to do with misunderstandings and/or people who are easily offended when their photos are "critiqued".
I feel like when you put your work up on display you have to be willing to accept that it will be "critiqued" whether it's said or not. At the same time I know that beginners will be hesitant to show their photos for fear that someone will tell them it's too saturated or the colors are wrong. I want to encourage new members to display their work and get positive or useful criticism that helps them become better photographers. And I want "senior members" to understand that their will be new members who might be new to us but have things to teach all of us as well.
Mainly let's keep it fun and respect each other. Until we have rules placed up let's try to keep the off topic discussions...off topic, but let's also not continually say, "less talk, more pictures" or "too much talking", etc.
I really do think different picture categories would help.

As a forum we will newer completely agree, there will be some fights I am sure, I just hope that we can learn from the mistakes of other forums, just make this forum mostly a fun place to be a Nikon Fan, to take about Nikon, with pictures sharing etc
I used to think that DpReview was fun also, but I rarely use their forum anymore, there are just to many nasty wars going on all the time, and I think there are some on that Forum that like it that way.
So Niko admin and other Mods I hope you find a way to control this Forum

Yeah I agree about Dpreview forums. I've been a member there since 1999/2000 and rarely ever participate anymore :^(
I too don't want to see that happen here but with more people comes more problems. So it's best to get this place organized now.Posted 3 years ago #
