Not trying to start "another forum fight" (there seem to be a lot of them brewing lately) but I think there are some strong opinions about this and we should discuss them here.
I think the more people we have participating in the PAD then the more "off topic" conversations will happen. Since Admin's working on the forum rules, now's a good time to bring this up in an "official" thread. What do you think?
Hrm... that's a tough one as I like to go off topic... How bout this for a compromise. You can go off topic, but only if you include a picture? That should keep the discussion mostly around the pictures.
But it's only ONE photo per day or at least that's the "rule".
The "chit-chat" goes along for a while sometimes. I don't have a problem with it. I think it's fun but that's just me. What I have a problem with are some of the rude comments (too saturated, is your monitor calibrated, saturation police are gonna get you, too much talking, etc.)
To avoid conflicts maybe we should try "photos only"
I think that it is very hard to go off topic when you post an image of the topic that your discussing.....maybe I'm obtuse.......my wife says I am ;)
I agree with you shutterdancer, that's why maybe it should be "photos only"?
Niko...It is very hard to not comment on an image....I mean afterall...if you like it, you say so...If you don't...you say so...or if its blase you say nothing, the best way to go IMHO ;)
If bandwith is a problem...so be it.....but lets face it...no photographer can keep his mouth shut when it comes to images...and the best way to get your point across is to post your comment along with the image that your commenting on.
Again I totally agree but others feel the PAD should have much less commenting and more pictures. I can see that reasoning too, so that's why I thought we should discuss it here and get more opinions.
Even if the PAD was for photos only, it would be tough to "police" a no comments rule.
I've never posted anything on the photo-a-day threads, so I can write something here without any emotional bias.
I think the real question is this: what is the purpose of the photo-a-day threads?
Is it so that people can post images and get them critiqued by forum members? Photos only doesn't seem to be helpful if that's the case. And, like shutterdancer says, limiting people to only positive comments also seems ridiculous.
Is it just so that people can see some of the pictures people are taking to get inspiration for something they might want to do? Then photos only might be the way to go.
Yeah I hear you too Jonny. I post just for fun and I'm sure most members do as well. But I feel some, whether they admit it or not, seek a "pat on the back". I'm use to extremely harsh critiques. I've worked my but off for clients only to have them pick a last minute "snap shot" I thought was awful :^(
I've also wonder what the point of having the PAD was? Most other forums that I'm a part of have seperate areas for photo threads which are then broken down by topic. Such as all the bird threads are here and all the portraits are there etc. If you don't want to see all bird pictures all the time (no offense Gentoo just an example) then you don't go to that thread.
This is the only forum that just has one big photo thread.
There's no accounting for taste.
Here is what I think....If no one can comment on them...why post them...If no one tells you to keep it up!, your headed in the right direction...you maybe should have done this or that....that sucks...but here is what I think that you can do to make it better Then why bother.....everyone is inspired by positive feedback...everyone learns by "CONSTRUCTIVE" criticism....so yes...a picture is worth a thousand words...but a picture with no words ( comments) is lost in space!
OK but what about those who get upset when someone points out that the saturation is "high" etc. Often that "sets them off" and then the "rude" comments start up.
Or the comments about too much "talking". Are you OK with a mod stepping in and telling everyone to stop "porky pigging" and post pictures?
You just saw me do it....LOL!!....so I must be :)....Old dudes can learn a trick or two!
Presumably you could leave comments in the Flickr\Photobucket\whatever section. I like the way we do it here.
For the times when we get woefully off topic - Like my Economic Analysis of Natty Light vs. the Good Stuff... well that's what we have moderators for. Just delete (or move) the non-photo related banter.
BTW: All of your Avatars are over-saturated except for mine :)
I don't like that Willis. I wouldn't want my comments deleted otherwise what's the point in discussing things?
As for the flikr comments I agree. I usually do that to avoid long back and forth comments but I don't want to sign up for various photo hosting sites just to leave the occasional comment.
I say we're here to have fun. So let's have fun OT comments and all :^)
I just mean the stuff that obviously doesn't belong. PAD's should be about photos and comments about photos. If it gets off on a tangent, then other people's photos might get missed and they won't get a chance for meaningful feedback. For all the other stuff, I say let the thread hijacking commence!
Well so far I'd say all the "porky pigging" has been related to a photo. Even your Natty light was because of your bar picture. I didn't see any harm in it.
I agree...If you want to have pictures...and only pictures...no problem....afterall...this ain't Flickr...who cares if anyone likes them or not!
If you can't tell someone if their pics are good or bad then everyone is equal....a true democracy....I like it already :)

Niko - for me PAD thread is for photos and about photos, if I post a comment on someones picture is not to offend that person but to show what I think about that particular picture, if it's over saturated for me than I say so, if I like the mood than I also say about it. The fact that I like something doesn't mean that someone else likes it too. But that what I call a constructive criticism.
Summing up, we all love our photos, and think they are the best, but let's face the truth some of them are, some of them aren't.

as for this, as it goes directly towards my person, I think that any off-topic discussion should be moved to new threads - too make the PAD topic free of things not related to photos. I don't care and never did, when the discussion was page long but was referring to pictures, but once we get a whole page of off-topic stuff and no pictures than I write about that.
also one thing that should be used very carefully is using the "quote" option to write comments about pictures. it's great option, but makes the whole thread less clean. maybe it's not a problem for those ones who use only computer screen with high resolution, but try to go through this thread on smaller devices, i.e. iphone - you can easily get very confused.
Niko - I think you are right for now. It could get worse as the forum grows. We can always address it at a later date.
I'm not singling you out adam or, for that matter, you Gentoo, so don't take it in that way. I agree with you adam that you should tell someone when you feel the photo is too this or too that. But the problem is that some take offense to that. Which I don't understand. If I tell Willis I think his bar photo is too dark, I'm not saying it so Willis can get upset and tell me my monitor is not bright enough.
If you adam tell me my photo of a nude model has too much photoshop and not enough camera I take it into consideration to understand why you say that or I just laugh it off.
I understand your point about the quote "machine" but it's a feature people wanted to have so I don't think we should limit it's use.
Willis I think that's just sweeping the problem under the rug :^(
Admin's writing up the forum rules as we speak and now's a better time than later.

as for quote machine, let's try to don't use it on the PAD thread, or at least limit to one photo per day, as trust me gals and guys it gets very tough to follow on low res screens
What else is a rug good for? Otherwise it just sits there.
