I am in the market for a new smaller capacity, high speed CF card. I was looking at a few on Amazon.com...but before I make the purchase, I wanted to run them by people much more experienced than myself.

go for Sandisk Extreme III (now Sandisk Extreme) - it's really fast for normal shooting, and unless You are a commercial sport/wildlife photographer, there's really no sense on spending that amount of money on something that will cost have it's price in a period of 12 months
Ah, thank you for being the voice of reason, Adam. A 400x 60MB/s card is going to be just fine...no need to throw away money on a 600x 90MB/s which is 3x the price!

What model Nikon do you have Phil? I agree with adam. Even if you get a 600x card you likely won't notice a big difference depending on your camera.
I agree with the Extreme III advice. Black Friday last year I bought 6 4GB Extreme III cards for the price of shipping (after rebates). 24 fast GBs for $12. I was in heaven. They are really fast (I doubt you'd tell the difference between them and a UDMA 6 card except maybe in card reader to computer transfers). The only time I ever filled my D300's buffer was shooting raw at an air show.
If you can wait until the end of the month, I'll bet you can get another deal like that.
Niko: It will be used with my D700. I can see his point...besides, it's not like I shoot burst mode in RAW all that often anyways! :)

I'm only willing to part with it so easily because my D300 got stolen, and I just stocked up on SD cards for my new D90. I won't be using CF until I get a D700 or the D700 replacement when it comes out, and by then I assume the bigger sizes will be lots more affordable.
Oh, and I found out about it last year because I signed up for flash memory deal alerts at dealnews.com.

I'm OTOH shooting in RAW all the time, and almost always run out of buffer, but with the ExIII it takes only a short period of time to get the pictures filling the card once again. Moreover, I've never had a problem with Sandisk. Neither on SD or CF.

Adamz, I also shoot raw exclusively, but even shooting weddings I have never filled my buffer. Ditto the comments about sandisk's reliability.

This brings up something interesting to me, though, Adamz. Do you use picture controls? What camera do you use and how big does it say your buffer is when you push the shutter down halfway? My buddy couldn't figure out how I was shooting such long raw sequences in continuous high mode on my D300, which is the same camera he had (incidentally, it was at this same air show I mentioned). It turns out it was because he had active D-lighting on (or long exposure noise reduction or high ISO noise reduction--I forget which, but I believe all will make your buffer smaller).

jonny - I don't use any build-in picture controls or anything from the camera software that has influence on my pictures; I'm shooting either in pure RAW or RAW+small jpg (saves some time in aperture, as it uses the small files to generate the preview). As for cameras I'm using either d200 or d90. To be honest I'm using only the aperture/shutter control + occasionally +/- exposure compensation when I see that the picture is either too over/under exposed
as for the buffer size, well AFAIR - d200 is 21 and d90 is 6 in RAW - which means that I can take around 30 continuous pictures on d200 and 10 in d90
The D90's buffer size is 9 raw files. If it matters to you, I'd check those settings that I mentioned above. The default for active d-lighting is auto, not off (I guess maybe the camera is geared toward jpg shooters?). For raw+jpg (small fine) the buffer drops to 7 shots.

jpnnyapple - I've just checked my d90, and the buffer says 6 shots, that's confusing, can someone else check it please?
as for the d-lightning in auto mode, yeah most likely You are right - it's more a serious amateur camera than semi pro
I'm looking at my D90 now and it says 9 in the buffer. Turning Active D-lighting to auto keeps it at 9, and so does high ISO noise reduction (so I was wrong about those). Turning long exposure noise reduction on makes the buffer only 6.
thanks, indeed my 6 shots was due to the "Long exp.NR" turned ON, after turning it off it's 9.
BTW: I think we just found a bug in the d90 firmware, as it's written in the manual that this function has an influence on pictures with exposure time over 8seconds, so this shouldn't have any impact on pictures with lower shutter speeds not to mention the cameras itself
