Sorry Aprille it sounds and looks like your shutter is starting to fail :^(
How long have you had the camera? Two or three years....I hope not! I'm in the middle of a photo class. This is terrible timing....
Though I have to admit, I will be very happy to finally get a new camera. The D50 is great as first DSLR when you know absolutely nothing, but once you start to actually learn the camera and figure out what you're doing, you go "Hey, this is a lame camera." Hahaha

Gentoo-
That would be awesome =D
Just give me a week or two to get well....Kristen gave me the flu. =(

HahahaI know, it's so much fun! At school all the kids are always saying I have an awesome camera, and I tell them that it sucks, 'cause it does! Maybe if I had a D3S or something I'd have a different opinion on my camera but... :^)

Aprille, I felt the same about the D40 when I had it. This is why I always suggest to those who want to do more than shoot family photos more than the entry level cameras. You will love the D90.

As for the flu it is a pandemic for a few months know, what we have in Ukraine is epidemic.
As for shutter it should survive about 25000 to 40000 shots on D50.

Should is the key word but unfortunately the proof is in her pictures :^(
It might not be a complete failure but the shutter isn't doing what it's suppose to.Posted 3 years ago # -
Right Niko, the key words are should and average, I wonder how many shots this shutter has taken. It could easily be obtained by reading EXIF data.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I'm reading about 60,000 clicks from her photo, but it could actually be more. My D70 exif says my shutter count is only 19,000 when I know it's closer to 60,000. The shutter count exif can get reset sometimes.

That is also true, it depends on the size of a shot counter in the camera among other things but at 60k it could fail on D50. We should only hope that it is not because replacement with new one will probably cost more then new D3000.
As I understood Canon does not give this at all in EXIF data.Posted 3 years ago # -
So....I am in serious trouble. I don't have a properly funtioning camera in the middle of a photo class.
I have decided it's time for the D90 :-)
Good deal?

Just get it. A D90 is a D90, whatever the price. No matter what, you won't regret getting it.
Posted 3 years ago # -
same price as in B&H, You wouldn't regret Your choice aprille

I'm starting to think you sabotaged your own camera Aprille :^)

Hahahaha yup, you caught me =p

Sucks that your D50 has died on you. It's probably the cheapest old autofocus ready camera. Perhaps I would have gotten one if I hadn't gone for the D40.
Looking at the database again, I was a bit shocked to see that the average shutter lifespan for a D40 is only 16,879.

As much as I would like to replace it with a D90 or higher camera, I'd hate to see the D40 go.
I passed 10,000 about 6 months ago...

16,879 is the average shutter count of submitters with working shutters.
95,621 is the average shutter count at which submitters who had their shutter die report failure.Though, there are two outliers, perhaps those should be discounted.
