I switched to my 70-300mm lens while I was shooting today, but for some reason the bottom part of all the images were showing up black, like this. It worked fine the last time I used it, and my other lenses were all working fine.

Anyone know what was going on here?

Were you using flash and are you seeing this problem with any of your other lenses? Only with the 70-300? Also is this the new Nikon 70-300 "G" lens or an older "D" lens? Or actually is it even a Nikon?

EDIT: I see it's a Tamron 70-300. So make sure you've got the aperture on the lens locked at f22. Then check the contacts on the lens and make sure they aren't dirty.

check either the lens hood was rotated properly - if You have a tulip shape than sth like this could happen when the hood was attached improperly

niko - for sure it's not due to flashlight, as then the black wouldn't be evenly placed on the bottom - it would be more circular

That's exactly what happens when the flash doesn't sync with the shutter. If she were using a non-Nikon external flash it's a possible result.

Thanks Niko and Amdamz....I have no idea what was going on, but I put the lens on today and it's working fine.

    .....I'm confused.

I have had this same type of thing show up before...using a corrupted data card. Not very often....but it's happened.

Shutter has horizontal movement so this could not be an effect of flash sync issue, the black stripe would be vertical if this was a shutter issue.
The simplest explanation may be as adamz proposed that the hood was not properly mounted.

MB, I think the shutter movement is actually vertical. Check out this 'movie' of a D3 shutter release (including the mirror flip-up).
There was no flash on the image (I checked the metadata), so flash sync problems couldn't explain it.
I agree that the hood is the most likely cause. Does this lens have Tamron's VC on it? I guess it's unlikely, but I was thinking maybe the vibration compensation could have put the lens's image circle off of the sensor.
I can't see how a bad card could explain it.

External "dumb" flash won't show up on metadata. Shutter movement is vertical. Some older cameras have horizontal shutter movement. Aprille hasn't really said much to help solve the mystery.

BTW I love watching that "movie" Jonny. I thought I posted it here when it first came out.

Yep you are right, at least on D3 and F4, it is vertical, it is not so on all the Nikons though but on newer ones it seams that it is. Stupid me I never check that my self for many years.
Actually the point behind this is that the mirror and curtain travel in opposite directions reducing vibrations, clever design …

You probably did, Niko. I'm pretty sure I saw it on NR.

I think I see some off camera flash (to the right). I've seen people complain that budget triggers like the Cactus can cause that. See link:

Also: Make sure you are shooting within your camera's sync speed. Your camera won't let you do this, but if you are using off camera dumb flash, then it won't ever know.

    No flash or lens hood.
When I used my camera today, this started happening again, but with a different lens. The lens I was having this problem with yesterday worked fine. It just randomly happens with different lenses...I tried switching memory cards too.

I like that solution! Let's hope your D90'll fail too so you can look into the D300S ;^)

Well aprille I think I can trust you so perhaps one day, the three of us can go shoot together and you can use my D90 to "test drive" it if you like.
