New to the site. I love the idea of Shooting video with the Canon 5D Mark@. I went to film scool in NY and did some shorts in 16mm. Its a lot of money to do etc. I never liked the look of even the best video only cameras...but when I look at what people are doing with this 5D2 I really like the look. AS FOR THE AF. I can understand that people dont like how it works if they want to shoot home vidoe etc. but for me...well I think in turms on scenes not one long shot. Some people dont relize that when they see a movie there are like 12 static shots just to watch 2 people sitting at a table having a cup of coffee. I love that tech. rather than the modern shake and bake look that to me should only be used in limited amounts in an otherwise classic style film. In other words...the Manual Focus is the way most film makers would want it anyway.
I hope Nikon responds to the 5D2 ASAP. The 700 makes the most sense to me because of the Low available Light capability etc. I would much rather have a Nikon but dont want to wait too long for it.

Maybe there is something else you're looking for in video but the Nikon D90 does video.

True...and a greeat camera... but want, Full Frame, better low light, Better camera in General, HD etc.

get the new rebel instead. cheaper than the 5DII, pretty decent still camera, perfect for school projects. sure it has all the glitches of the 5DII (rolling shutter, no manual mode, lack of 24fps). But why spend over 2K for what amounts to a point and shoot video camera?
Posted 4 years ago # -
The problem with the Rebel T1i is that it's a weird 20fps. That will get you some jumpy video.
Posted 4 years ago # -
a little yeah, but 4fps isn't worth over a grand if video is what you are looking to do most of. The new t1i is a pretty decent still dslr, takes all canon lenses, shoots 1080 and 720p video and costs a fraction of the 5DII.
If you need full frame by all means get it, but it's a heck of a lot of money just for video. Not to mention every single DSLR released in the next 18 months will probably have HD video at a more affordable price.

The only reason Im so into getting one of these is because to me, they look so much better than the best video I have seen. As for the gitches. Im hoping that the d700 will the answer. They have the 90 and the 5d2 to learn from. I know Ican save with a lower model and that there will be many to choose from soon...thats why I want th e best now so theeere wont be such a leap going forward in tech. The diff. between a rebel and what I think will be in a d700 level HD are enough to make me wait if its not too long.

My guess is that the earliest you would see a D700 HD (more likely a D700s or something) would be September 09. I suspect Nikon could do it tomorrow with a firmware update, but they probably won't. To be sure, if they do, it will be expensive (think $2700 or more).
Personally, I have a hard time getting excited about video. I have it on my D90 and haven't used it yet. As I'm starting to get into off camera lighting a little more, I might use it to document my set ups. Other than that, its not important to me.
I'd be curious how many of you pro types do both serious video and still photography. It seems to me the better path forward for Nikon and cannon would be to make dedicated video cameras that accept their lenses.

OK...Its Sept. and Nikon has not put forth its comp. to the 5D-MARKII. Im hoping they will soon...anybody have any good info???

The only thing I can think of is that whatever replaces the D700 will be a 5DII competitor...or killer.
Posted 3 years ago # -
If You lost 4 months of capturing possibilities, than it only means for me that You don't need a camera as You can live without it :)
Posted 3 years ago # -
It always kills me when people say things like, "you must not need the camera if your waiting for such and such option etc". Tech. is changing...obviously HD is here to stay and guess what??? some people want it/like it. That said, since I am making a big purchase soon, I would like to get a Nikon rather than a Canon if possible. Its not so complicated. If you have a good tip, great. If not, save the sarcasm...if your capable of doing so.

artttt - sorry if I hurt Your feelings, but thats just my opinion, and You don't have to agree with it, but please respect it. I know that the technology is changing, but it's changing for all of us, and therefore there is a line, where You should say to You: "How long more can I wait?" at this time, Nikon has 3 different HD cameras, so there is a choice.

I agree with Adamz: You can wait forever because there will always be something better next week, month, year etc. Maybe there will be a new D700 soon or maybe it will be sometime next year. Get your camera, imac, iphone etc when you need it and then get out and use it, you will newer have that latest thing for very long. Maybe it will be a D700s with same upgrades like the D300s and then early next year a D700X/800 with 24MP, who knows none of us on this forum have any idea, we just wish for them.
So Arttt: if video is important then your choice is Nikon or Canon right(could be Panasonic also, but that is less than DX format). If you want FF then only Canon or you could get the D300s if you can live with the DX format

I understand...and Im not the kind of person who will wait for more MPs etc. But an answer to the 5D Mark II is logical if you want what that camera offers but want a Nikon...Yes? Thats what Im hoping for...the D700 as a 5D Mark II response with the time now to make a few improvements. Will there be more and more and more improvements? Yes. The 5D Mark II was a giant move in motion pictures for the masses who dont have the big,big bucks for a RED camera. I say this as a filmaker....film...sounds funny now. At the price the Mark II sell for there has never been such a rich film like look. Then, you get an awsome still camera to boot! Lets go Nikon...clean Canons clock!!!

Artt, I see your point. But I also see adamz point as well. A word of advice, try not to take the sarcasm too seriously. That's just how we are around here. Just look at me and adamz interact with one another. Both of us can get a little short with one another but neither of us takes it personally.

I take it personally! I then go and sulk for days ... after that I forget and forgive .. well more forget than forgive as I am getting old and tend to forget a lot. by the end of a sentence I dont know why I started it or what it was about... and then I find I am back here for some fun ..!!
I think I would like a D700 for Xmas.. Hope they come out with a new one by then so I can get an old one cheap!!

Just try to post the same on Dpreview and get their little rosy advices
And, I don't think the next D700 replacement is going to be lot better at doing video in comparison to the new D300, unless the replacement will not be small s upgrade but a larger upgrade to 24MP etc at a much later date.
But I do understand your point, I did use Canon and had some issues with them and just like Nikon better, maybe just try out the D300s see if it can do what you want. Then trade up (or keep D300s as backup) when the D700 replacement arrives. Just get FX lenses for the D300s. And all that you learn on the D300s can most likely be done in the same way on the new D700 replacementOr, get the 5DmkII and be done with it

gentoo - well said my friend, well said !

Thanks Pete...I get it. The D300 is a good idea...I think I will wait for the D700 as Nikon has to answer the 5D comp. issue. If they take too long I will go with the Canon...and as you put it so well...be done with it,(and Nikon) for some time.

Whatever you buy, I'd wait until Christmas to buy it. Retail has been hurting all year long, and the pressure is on to make up for some lost ground with a solid holiday season... which is going to be pretty tough with 10% unemployment.
Historically, Late November\December has been a great time to buy Nikon bodies. I got my D90 for less than $900. Almost a year later, it still sells for more. I think we will see some pretty sweet rebates hit in the near future.
That said, I don't expect a solution for the rolling shutter from Nikon anytime soon. For real film makers, that's probably not going to be an issue. For handheld home movie making, it can get a little wonky if you don't shoot within the camera's limitations. Nikon seems to be treating video as more of a hobby then a serious discipline. And that's just fine with me.
I'd be curious to know anyone's thoughts on wether or not a larger sensor would exacerbate the rolling shutter problem. Seems to me that it would, but I'm not much of a technical guy.

I agree with arttt. There is a point where you have the features you need and anything less and you just don't have what you need. I am a owner/operator of a Red camera and I also shoot with a D3. I love my nikon glass and I use it on my red via a nikon mount. The main thing I shoot is music videos and the 5Dm2 is really changed the game for many. I even bought a 5Dm2 for smaller jobs and rental clients. So after shooting on the Red with nikon lenses and shooting with a 5D I feel the current nikon models that shoot video lack the features I need. So like arttt I'm waiting not so much for the perfect camera but for specific features. Give me full 1080p or greater, manual control, 24 and 48 fps, and a decent codec and I will buy it.
I just sold my 5Dm2 this past friday. The 5D shoots awesome stills and great video, but with the new 7D canon shows that video is important and the have fixed many of the problems with the 5D. But I'm not going to buy a 7D but instead wait a little longer on nikon because of the quality of nikkor lenses.
I would love for a D4 or D700 to shoot pro video. Not only dose nikon make a better product but the new breed of nikkor lens smoke canon's.... the 14-24 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8 and I can only guess the new 70-200 f/2.8 with the right body will ruin canon's party...

"Nikon seems to be treating video as more of a hobby then a serious discipline. And that's just fine with me."
I agree with you willis. Nikon seems to want to keep their DSLR's as cameras first. Video is fine as long as it doesn't hurt anything else.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I cant agree more. But come on, I dont think they would ever hurt what the D700 is. The gate is down and the race is on...so again, Nikon must answer the 5DMarkII. I just hope they do so very soon.
Posted 3 years ago # -
why does Nikon have to answer 5dII, canon never answered Nikon's d3/d700
