This is from a thread over on dpreview by Mlammerse. Jeff-C comments that he doubts the "D700x"will be called "D800" to which Michel responds with the quote below. I think the D500 sounds interesting, but another DX prosumer camera so close to the D300S upgrade?!

"Me was promised it wlll not be named D700X. I hope so, otherwise it will cost me some wine!
Furthermore I heard it will not have 24MP and also not the same sensor due to problems with video and that the it will be 18MP.
These are the names I heard last week again (I always ask once a week about news and which should come out in 2010.
    D500 (DX)
    D800
A new wide angle prime lens
A new mid range zoom lens with VR
A super tele zoom lens with VR
    No details yet
EDIT: the only detail I heard is that new Nikon items will be there in February 2010, don't know if February is a special month for Nikon, I'm not a Nikon guru and don't know there release history by heart.
    Michel"

If true that doesn't sound like bad new to me. I hope the super tele zoom is a high-end 100-500/4-5.6 as previously rumored.

Well it's bad news if you just bought a D300S! I'd heard about a D300 replacement coming in Feb 2010 so I was surprised when the D300S turned out to be real.

I'm still hearing about "something" coming in 2010 so that's why I was hoping it was a "low end" full frame since another DX D400/D500 wouldn't make sense six months after the D300S? A full frame could be sold happily along side a D300S.

Never a bad time for a D300s, you've got the best DX to shoot with until... later

Did your quote button get stuck there ted? lol

No ted, all D300S's will stop working once the D500 comes out :^)

They better not upgrade my D90, I'm hoping for years of additional service.

That's exactly why I got a D300. I don't trust that S stuff. Stands for Sneaky if you ask me.

I wouldn't say that alpha. It's still a Nikon and just as capable of taking great pictures as any other model. It's the composer not the piano!

D800 sounds a bit too good to be true... considering d3s just came out
and d800 will be better in most aspects but speed and some other minor things .... hm.... really dont think we gone see d700x/800 till mid next year

Wow, maybe Nikon sees a threat from the Canon 7D so they moved the D300s replacement up?

But then again, they really have nothing to worry about. Until Canon completely fixes the ghosting (I don't follow Canon's canon, so it might be fixed already), I don't think many Nikonians will jump ship just yet.

And I would love if Nikon made a cheap wide angle prime. I love the 35mm 1.8, but I hate stepping back a mile to make a wider angle shot.

and I really want a 100-500/4-5.6 with pro quality. The 200-400/4 is too big and expensive and Nikon needs to compete with the Canon 100-400, a real winner among wildlife photographers and I think better than the current Nikon 80-400. Let's hope they make us all happy.

Canon has already released firmware to correct the "barely noticeable" problem of the 7D. Nau the D700 didn't make sense either when it was rumored. Why would anyone buy a D3 when you could get a D700?

The man in my local shop just advised me that if I felt like spending some money to upgrade my D300, I should NOT buy the D300S ! The reasons: Not worth it (He knows I don't care about video), and the near future release of a real upgrade…

I guess he means this D500 but I don't think he knows any more than what he told me, which is quite significant in my opinion.

I was wondering that too but then again, Nikon is great at not releasing in chronological order; D50 then D40 then D60. Although they've not yet done that in this line but who knows.

AFAIK, the number 4 is bad luck, in certain Oriental countries.

Skipping 400, 500, and 600 makes sense to me as it leaves room for DX x00 bodies below the FF x00 bodies.

Yea, early in the digital age they broke silly with 70 and 50, but they have always been shuffled in the x0 line, see 75 post 80, etc.

I had been _hopeful_ those days were over with the three chronological generations at 100, 200, 300, but I guess not.
