A D700. After 45 years with film, the last 42 years with a couple of Konica Autoreflex, I finally took the plunge. A D700, with 14-24, an AFS50mm 1.4, and a 70-300VR. I still miss my Konica 57mm f/1.2, but the D700 (with the 14-24) is the only piece of technical equipment that I ever bought that still gets me excited after five months of use. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this camera. I also find the 14-24 awesome beyond believe. The sales guy talked me into it, in lieu of the 17-35. He was right, but it depleted my cash. That's why I settled for the 70-300VR. Actually, it is better than its reputation. Still, I'm looking for something beyond 300mm that does not break the bank.

Enjoy that D700!Posted 3 years ago # -
I had a similar story... Roughly a decade of shooting film on my minolta x-700 and Canon FD's (hate!!!) i decided to try digital. Although I never officially owned on I tried and shot with many(if not most) of the canon lineup for the past 2 years and hated every one from the rebel to the Mark III. They took too long to figure out and didn't "think" how I did. Well this summer I decided to try the nikon D90, figured it out in seconds (it was comfortable too and didn't dig into my hands or give me thumb cramps), and fell in love with it. Well as you know 1 thing leads to another and now I have a whole system(half of it being Fx lenses), and hope to get a D700 (or the rumored D900[pma?]) too.

My first camera was a Ricoh 35mm film point and shoot, in the early 90s. First digital was a Kodak P&S (2004), cannot recall the model number. My first DSLR was the D80.

Been shooting film since '68 and still doing it! My first DSLR was a D40, purchased to take to the British Isles on my honeymoon two years ago (didn't want to hassle customs with film). Took over 600 shots with it and was very pleased! Moved up to a D200, and now I've got a super D700. I still use, and love my FSLRs, though.

First camera - Cosmic 35; brilliant little camera, made in the USSR and hugely subsidised by the USSR to prove how advanced their technology was (and it was indeed very advanced compared to the West!).
First SLR - Fuji ST705; one of the early cameras with a built-in light meter!!
First digi - Nikon Coolpix 950; good pics but sloooow
First DSLR - Sony a350; very disappointing
Second DSLR - D90 (hooray!)

Unfortunately my first digital camera was a sony T7 Cyber Shot. I bought it for the look of it nice and slim but it produced awful images. Then I switched to a canon power shot IXY 800IS which I still use even today but just for its low quality video usually.

started with an oly 730 superzoom... 3.2 mp and 10 times optical zoom. AND I could make a sequence of 3 pics at 3 fps!! And believe me, that thing was really wild at that time :D
Thereafter came my trustworthy D70, now on retirement untill my D200 drops dead or is replaced with an D900-alike (read 24mp FX equals ±10 mp DX...fare trade, no?) I can't help it, but I'm still more in love with my D70 then with the D200...dunno why...perhaps because it was my first SLR..who knows...Posted 3 years ago # -

Canon Powershot A85. And Nikon D40x as first DSLR. But it all started 25 years ago in a pre-digital age with a Smena 8M :).

Coolpix 5000. Of course, this was not a camera to take pictures of people, because by the time the shutter activated the people had lost patience and walked away, but the image quality was excellent, the 28mm lens equivalent + wide adapter for true wide shots made it suitable for documentary pictures for urban planning, my principal application. With the AA battery pack it would take pictures all day. After getting this camera, I almost never used film. For the same price, the D70 that replaced it turned my F100 and M4 to quaint historic artifacts that soon made it to eBay. Compared to about 25 cents per shot I was paying for film and prints, the Coolpix paid for itself in savings in less than a year.

Hey mb, your right the D40 was a fantastic camera. I also had the D40x as well and they were great cameras to learn with. Very small, produced great images and all for a low price. I thought Nikon hit a home run with these models back in 2006. If I still had one, I'd probably hold onto it.
