What are the odds of two bodies being introduced on the 14th? WIth the recent rumor posts, all the craze is over the d5000 with its lame flip screen. I want the D400 too! I know they did two bodies with the d3/d300 announcement so hopefully they do two next week. I can't wait any longer!

what do you want from D400 whats not already there and possible to implement ?

It's not entirely about the new features. There are a few other factors as well. It means that the D300 price will drop at some point which I would be very happy about. But if the camera has the same or better IQ with more MP, better ISO performance, video all for roughly the current price of the D300, I would def pick it up. That's just me though. I'm sure everyone is different.

d400 not gone be the same price when its introduced,
megapixels - do people still really care ? really ?
ISO yeh thats something that will be improved (compare to D300 that is)Posted 4 years ago # -
If recent history is any guide, then the odds of a second camera being announced are getting pretty slim. It seems that the inevitable slips and leaks happen about 1-2 weeks before an announcement with subsequent slip ups coming as release date gets closer. The recent "D5000" leaks are the usual stuff and they look legit so far. There's nothing about a D400 at all. Remember that the word got out months ago that the D40 inventory was all finished and D60s are being moved in bulk at places like Sam's Club. I suspect that the D400 won't be announced until D300 stocks are very low. Same with the successor to the D700. Both of those cameras are still selling quite well at current prices.

I wouldn't say that I "care" about megapixels. I think 8 to 10 is plenty personally, but if someone offers me two identical cameras at the same price, both having the same IQ, only one has 3 more megapixels, I'm going to take the one with more megapixels. Not because I care, but because it's just stupid not to.

I doubt that we will see 2 bodies. Nikon likes to keep the tension, there is no reason to use two bullets for one shot when they can have two shots with two bullets. I hope I am wrong.

What is so lame about the flipscreen? The camera is an entrylevel and aimed at people who have had a taste of manually controlling the process with high-end point-and-shoots. I came to the DSLR world from a Canon S3 which had a liveview flip-fold-etc-screen and for me (then i knew squat about SLR) it came as a shock that I would be giving up the liveview with the flip-screen, and hadn't I been so determined to get an SLR it could have been a serious deterrent for me. Now of course I don't even care for a liveview and it will never become and argument for upgrading or tilting my decision to one camera or another.
I think this is a nice scheme by Nikon to get more people into the DSLR world ... remember that most people entering the DSLR world have very limited knowledge of what they are in for.

I somehow doubt that we will see a D400, or whatever it is going to be called in the near future, we are more likely to see an x model of the D300 or the D700. Somehow I don't see a D400 until the full Pro model goes up another digit.

We can always hope and its only 7 days until we know for sure. I for one am waiting for a D300 upgrade, if I'm not getting the upgrade, then maybe there will be more generous offers for the D300 :)

We can hope, but it seams that Nikon is preparing second low cost camera (something called D3000 or something like that and lower then D5000), and that one will see the day after D5000 and sooner than anything else (sooner than D400 for sure).

I still hope, that there's gonna be more than one DSLR announcement on the 14th, or if not that the announcement will be connected to D400 rather than d5000.

They've done it in the past so I see no reason why they wouldn't do so again.

Either Nikon has vastly improved their secrecy prior to announcements or the 14th will be rather a let down. Only 5 days to go and precious little other than the "advert shoot" posted on this website. That's rather remarkable. I think it will be the announcement for the new entry camera and that's about it. Still, for Nikon's bottom line this is huge.

i'd be glad with one new camera or no new camera. at least then people could appreciate what they have. but from the pictures it looked like a entry lvl dslr with swivel lcd

First of all D5000 would not be that entry level, not as entry level as D40 was at the time. It will cost just slightly less then D90, but it will be more amateurish friendly and will be missing most of controls more advanced photographers would like.
We knew all about D5000 for a couple of months now, but we really do not know anything more conclusive about D400 yet. I don’t think Nikon has gone that secret so that no information could leak about new camera, that is why I very much doubt D400 is anywhere near production.
On the other hand there are rumors of lower entry level model, D3000 or something similar, that I find very possible. It will surly not be announced the same day as D5000, but I think very soon after that.Posted 4 years ago # -
If you put yourself in Nikon's shoes the analysis of their priorities is not too hard.
The centers of unit sales, revenue and margin are a little different but the center of gravity lies among the higher P/S and entry DSLR models. In the current econo-typhoon you have to protect the best and most defensible parts of your market first. A new entry DSLR with an associated marketing push hits that target.
I doubt we'll see any quick turns in high end DSLR (or lenses for that matter). The competition has eaten their lunch in that space with the 5D Mk II and a hasty update to the D700 won't fix that, and Nikon knows this. Better to proceed on pace with (likely already planned) new models that will provide a better leap forward. It would not be surprising if some internal R&D projects are killed, though we may never know which ones until a lot later. There are a lot of design series now (D90, D300, D700, D3 along with all the P/S) and if $$ get very tight you can expect some model updates to get cancelled or deferred. The aging of the lens lines shows that some R&D has already been curtailed.

IMO, we're not going to see a D400 or a D700x on the 14th. Assuming we see something, I think it's going to be the low-level body with the articulating rear LCD that we've seen in the "spy shots" of the ad shoot. I don't expect to see any new lenses either, not even the rumored 10-24mm (which I don't believe is real anyway, but I've been wrong before.)
One of the problems that manufacturers are having in general is that the old product lines are still in stock, due to poor sales. So while you want to introduce new models to stimulate interest and sales, they will kill sales and/or reduce prices on the older models. I see this in the Sony line of LCD TVs: they've got the XBR6, 7, 8 and now the 9 line all in retail at the same time (although some retailers no longer have the XBR6 line and many never bothered with the 8). That's unprecedented to have so many different year's models in stock at the same time.

While I hate to admit it, I think you may be right about this and you gave some very good reasons that make perfect sense. Let's just hope you can add one more wrong to your collection LOL
