I am looking at purchasing a used Nikkor 70-200 /2.8. My question is, should I go for the older VR or the newer VRII. I have read about the focal length issues with the VRII and also the older VR version is cheaper on EBay than VRII. Any recommendations are appreciated.

I have the VRII and have never had any problems. If you can afford it, get a new VRII, it is one of Nikon best lenses. If you are short of cash the original VR is by all accounts an excellent lens but try it first, you can never be sure of its history

Are you using it for DX or FX?
If DX buy the VR and save the money. I have the VR and it works perfect for 98% of my FX needs. Only going slightly soft in the corners. If you crop to an 4x5 format you're fine. Add a TC14E II and you good in the corners on FX. The older VR is still a great lens.
