being interested in buying this lens I have the following questions
1, What is the projected shipping date(I read november, but that can be in 6 but also 36 days)
2, AF-stop buttons/ring, Seen the pictures, and have no idea how the 3rd rings works, just curious

2. for me there's no third ring - just a protective rubber, certainly not like in the old one - btw: did anyone used this buttons anyway? for me they are little bit out of reach (and I have big hands)
I had a brief opportunity to play with this lens at PhotoPlus East on Friday. This lens is amazing, and is everything Cliff Mautner said in his blog. I do not recall a third ring however.
The lens seems to focus a bit faster than the older one, but what amazed me was that I was able to focus on a man standing about 40 feet away, zoom in at 200mm, and get a sharp image at a 10th of a second shutter speed. No blur at all, you could see every detail in his beard, and the results were easily repeatable.
I bought the old one this spring and was amassed on how great the lens was, hard to believe that you can make a better lens and that the VR function could be made better also

I doubt you'll ever notice a difference on DX. If you worry about corner sharpness wide open of FX, then spend the extra $500. Nikon simply isn't going to mess up this lens, If they are confident enough to charge that kind of premium on one of their flagship lenses, its going to be great.
Beyond that, theres nothing we can tell you until one of us actually gets one.
Yes my lens will be OK for a while on my D300, I still think Nikon can make amassing lenses when they want to.
For full frame a new 24-70 2.8VR made like this new lens would simply make Nikon the king of Pro lenses in the area where it really counts.

Here's a question: Does anybody think that Nikon will discontinue one of the three __-200 ƒ/2.8s?
Properly the old 70-200 2.8VR, I think they will keep the old 80-200 as long as it is selling, now at half the cost of the lens

I bought this lens when it first came out and never regretted my money. It's Nikon's very very best !!!
Adamz: No I never used the AF stop buttons. They are a bit out of reach, and when I take pictures of fast moving planes, I have other things to worry about like keeping the plane in the frame and stop shaking ! :o)
Note that I always use it with a TC 1,4 at full focal length (420 mm), and things get very shaky, especially using shutter speeds of 1/160 or even 1/90 at times, when I get carried away. That's for propeller aircraft of course. Jets are easier.

I've been reading alot lately on the Nikon 70-200 VR II and thinking if it would be a good investment. I've already got the recent 18-200 VR II, and im using the nikon d90. Would it be "overkill" if i purchase the 70-200 for my nikon D90? I'm amazed with the sample pictures posted lately on this lens.

Hi Mishima. It depends on what you're going to be using it for? If you're only planing on using it occasionally for family photos then yeah maybe. However if your serious about your photography and plan to "take it to the next level" then it's one of Nikon's best lenses.

Im waitlisted at J&R. They just told me yesterday that they're expecting a shipment big enough to fill all their pre-orders. I really hope it comes before the 26th so I can give thanks to Nikon while also demolishing an entire pecan pie and watching my beloved Denver Broncos destroy the Giants.

The new version was to add the updated VR, improve the resolution a bit, and reduce vignetting on full frame cameras. If you never plan on using anything but DX, you might want to consider the old version. I doubt you'd have serious complaints about either one.
mishima - consider what jonnyapple wrote about the old version, as for the new one it will work perfectly, as all DX lenses use a smaller image circle than FX onses - so basically they only utilize the center (best) part of lens.
Just get whatever you feel could accomplish what you want it to. If it is sports, or wildlife you like to shoot, than go for it, providing you have the cash. (the 80-200mm is also a great choice, and at about $850 less than the 70-200mm vr, you could put that toward another lens/body/flash, or something else.) If you like to use your camera for mainly family/social events, than a 55-200mm would be the better bet. (The 55-200mm is insanely good in terms of optical quality, and has a better build than you may think.)

Besides, you might see some great deals on the old version used once the VRII starts shipping.
