Do you think there will ever be a sb-600 replacement coming out anytime soon...?
Should I wait a bit longer..? or just pull the trigger on the sb-600.
Willing to wait til mid december.. if not i want to get it now.
What'd yall think?
where there’s smoke there’s forum fire

If you can wait then wait. The next big announcement(s) will come in Jan/Feb 2010 maybe, perhaps.
Depends on if you need it or not.
If your primary use will just be on camera for bounce flash, just get it. The SB-600 is actually a pretty good little flash, as long as you don't need to fiddle with it. The only reason to wait for the SB-700 is if you plan to make use of Nikon's Creative Lighting System. The 600, by the way, works great with CLS, but setting it is kind of backwards.
If you don't mind carrying around a manual, or if you just have a propensity for remembering things I'd still go for the 600.
The biggest thing missing from the 600 is SU4 (dumb slave triggering) mode and a PC jack. If you don't need either of these and if price matters, then by all means don't wait. I expect that the 700 will probably launch around $250-300 anyway.
Niko: I was planning to get the SB-600 on 01.10.10 if that D700 does not work out
Pete
I have my 3rd SB-600 on the way. A refresh is coming, but it 'aint out yet.
hmm.. argh. tough decision. i have a d60 right now.
cls doens't work i think
No CLS :^(
8888...
CLS will work, but not from your pop up. You would need a SB900 or SU800. Just ask yourself if you really see yourself using it first. For Off camera flash, there are cheaper alternatives like PC cords\ adapters, sync cable etc.
If Wireless MANUEL off camera flash is what you want, go with the LumoPro LP120.
If you want wireless TTL w/ CLS... that's when you need the Nikon flashes. If that's the case, be prepared to spend some money, and definitely wait to see what's in the D700. If it gets commander mode, it will be your least expensive option.
Which brings up an interesting question - what will the SB-700 bring over the SB-600 (besides a price increase) which won't infringe on SB-900 territory? I don't want a wish-list of 900-level features we wish we could get for cheap, but a serious analysis of what Nikon might actually offer. For as I see it now the 600 is perfectly positioned as a stepping stone between the 400 and 900.
I think it will mostly be a UI update. The other areas with room for improvement are SU4 mode (which a flash its price should have anyway) and possibly a PC sync input (I doubt we'll see this as its more of a "Pro" feature). They won't come up on the guide number.
They may add support for the automatic Gel\White Balance thing. Nikon gets a hefty premium on those specially coded gels.
I'd be really happy to see the SB700 with an UI update (similar to SB900), and SU4 mode. If you want all the coded gels, telephoto capability, etc., get an SB900. I just want a CLS friendly slave unit.
What's a ui update..? thanks
That's what nerds call a "user interface" or the menu layout of the flash. The SB900 menu and button layout is much improved over the SB600/800. It's the main reason people want a "cheaper" SB900 to be called the SB700.
Without at least 2 flashes there is no CLS on D60 no matter the flash you are using.
SB-600 is very good flash and I doubt SB-700 will surpass it other then user friendly menu and hefty price increase of course.
I also very much doubt SB-600 price will be lower when SB-700 appear, remember SB-800.
So if you don’t mind learning couple of key combination SB-600 is a very good choice.
And when you switch to D90 you will have CLS as well, then you could add one or two low cost SB-R200s for almost studio like setup.
hmm. do you guys think that you can use the upcoming rebates on sb-600?
I would say that you need to get what YOU need....If you are Joe McNally and need to shoot through a gym window several hundred feet away through the rain to light a tiny dancer, then yes a couple of SB900s might be just what you need, but other than the fact that you have to fiddle with the SB600 more than the SB900 It's a very capable flash within it's range.
So with the SB-700 out, I found a SB-600 on CL for asking price of 180, used "4 times" I figure if i can get it for 150 or so it won't be a bad first flash for my d40 (and d7k on preorder)... thoughts? Doby, I found an old thread instead of opening a new one just for you ;)
Is it really out or? Nikon has announced it, I have yet to see an actual release date. Any info on this?
i think it just has been announced, not released. will probably come out alongside the d7k.
The SB-600 is more powerful than the SB-700.
Love my Sb-600 and if I have extra cash I'll pick up another one.
Also make sure you get Sanyo Enelope batteries and a decent charger!
+1 on the eneloops. I've had a great experience with them.
I think December is the availability for the SB-700.
Who says SB-700 is less powerful than SB-600, Ken Cockwell? Who listens to this noob?
