On the Rangefinderforum there is a poll underway regarding the most respected camera company. At this point Nikon has a narrow lead over Leica 24% vs 23%, but this is a rangefinder forum. Canon trails behind Cosina-Voigtlander at 14%. Say what you want about Leica folks, but they have a good respect for hardware and it's service to artistry!
Nikon most popular - even among rangerfinder fans

I have newer been on that Forum, but how are they viewing the new introduction of Dig Rangefinder cameras. Or are the mostly into film cameras only
I think that Panasonic and Olympus could start a new wave of interest in Rangefinders againPete

I wouldn't give "digital" Leica the same respect as "film" Leica. Not yet anyway.

I agree Niko, but the ergonomics and capabilities of a great rangefinder make street photography a different experience. Just like I wouldn't consider a ranger-finder camera for long lens, macro or critical focusing/compositional work, when you've worked with a range-finder camera in city crowds, an SLR separates you from the action. I won't say it's necessarily worse, just different. I always felt more part of things and less a mere observer when I used a range-finder. I also found it made me bolder in taking images of others.

Yes I agree but I have more respect for Leica film rangefinders than the M8, M8.2, or M9. Leica disappointed me with the M8. I'm not totally convinced on the the M9 yet. I'd have more high hope/respect for a digital Nikon SP for sure. I love Leica's film cameras but I'm not spending 8grand on another lemon.

They do know how to play their allure - and optimize the value of their lenses. If I had a bunch of Leica lenses, the temptation would be greater. I don't, so you have to add another $5-15k to the M-9 price to come to the party. I do have Contax G2 lenses, so if someone made a decent body that would allow me to use them, I'd pay for that privilege, not $7K, but probably more than a D700 for D90 performance.

It's kind of a strange poll because it asks what is "Currently the BEST Camera Company?" It's a rangefinder forum but Nikon currently has no rangefinder and Leica's M9 isn't even shipping yet? Panasonic is beating out Olympus, Pentax, and Fuji. Sony's at the bottom with Sigma. ???
