Can I ask you something? How trustworthy is your source? Did your source guaranteed its authenticity or is this really just some second hand information?
I somehow find that hard to believe that Nikon will release a D800 before Christmas. If Nikon planned to have such a camera ready for SALE end of December, they would have released it with the D3s last week. They would have had at least a pre-production unit to present!

I think 5 bodies in 2009 would be a lot... and having an announcement mid October and one mid November/early December seems excessive to me.
but of course having short delay between several announcements might be a good way to keep attention on the company.. maybe they wanted to make sure they have the last announcement before Christmas (versus Canon)

I don't work for Nikon so I won't know is the source is 100% true or not.
If it is just a speculation by end of the day, you have nothing to loose.
You just accept what Nikon will anounce the replacement model for D700 by the end of the day.
I will not be shocked if Nikon launches this replacement model for D700 by end of this year or else by early next year. For example Nikon launched Nikon D3X by 1st of December 2008.
Yes the D3X was announced Dec1 2008. However Nikon's previous announcement to that was in Aug (D90). So having another announcement a month and a half after the D3S seems very unlikely. In fact announcing a camera that has better features than the D3S just as it is hitting store shelves seems very very unlikely.
However Nikon has done strange things in the past. Such as announcing the D40X four months after the D40. And Nikon released one photo and a few specs of the D70 in early December two months before it's official unveiling in February 2004. Nikon even said, back in Dec 2003, that the D70 would go on sale in the spring of 2004! Maybe that's what will happen this time with the D800? Nikon will simply admit they are working on the development of a D800 and that it will be ready "later" in 2010.
The only problem with my "theory" is that at the time of the "D70 in development" statement, Nikon didn't have to worry about hurting sales of a D70 predecessor. They did it to make people think twice about buying the canon EOS 300D that was just hitting store shelves before Christmas. A "D800 in development" statement would certainly hurt D700 sales and if the specs are true would hurt D3S and D3X sales too.

Macindows I agree with what your saying, but I'm willing to wait and give Alan a chance. At least for two months ;^)
I agree, Niko, that Nikon is strange and they seem to like to keep customers guessing.
Maybe there's something to this--Nikon seemed surprised by how little demand fell off during the economic troubles. Maybe they were getting ready to sit back in storm-weathering mode and now they see they should go ahead full steam to keep their market share.
It doesn't hurt to dream. This is also my dream camera.
My point is the 5th body in a single year.
2005: 4 bodies (d70s, d50, d200, d2hs)
2006: 3 bodies
2007: 3 bodies
2008: 4 bodies
2009: 4 bodies so far.. a 5th one would be excisive.. I'm not saying that Nikon shouldn't release a D700x, imo it was the D3000 that wasn't needed... If there's a 5th body announced this year with the lenses, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a D4000...
About the D800 having better specs than the D3s, we can all agree that if we actually get a D800, the specs won't be better than what the D3s has to offer... the D800 would be the high resolution camera that obviously offers less in terms of high ISO performance than the D3s... Also, it's not the same body, the viewfinder won't be 100% (one of my desired feature that I'm gonna have to let go) and it won't have more fps than the D3x... same fps would be the top... however I'd really enjoy a higher fps when you use less mp... like a 6-7 fps when you use it at 12mp resolution or so..
They will end up being different cameras for different purposes for different people. (we already know that so I won't say more)
Also, the D800 won't be that much cheaper than the D3s... 5000$ vs what like 3800$? 4200$? When people are ready to pay such a price for a camera, they buy what they need and if they need the 5000$ one (for speed and better ISO) they will pay the 1000$ extra.

Though I think the D700 competes nicely with the 5DII, that's not the general view, and I think Nikon will eventually answer with a camera at a similar price point, not close to $4000 like you're suggesting, jbl. It seems like the debate is whether that will come in the form of a modest update like a D700s or an overhaul like the D800 people are talking about.
The D700 doesn't compete with the 5D mk2, They are both different cameras, they both have their strength... That's why Nikon should (imo) come out with a response to it.. that's why a response to the 5D mk2 is not really a D700 upgrade.. it's more like a D700x (just like the D3x is not a D3 upgrade)
About the price, yes 4000$ sounds like a lot of money considering the price of the 5D2 and Sony's stuff.. however you gotta keep in mind the price Nikon sells their D3x...

If it's 1080p with manual control on video with 30frames (24 would do but I'd like both) and it has the body of the D700 (not inferior) and performs like the D3x at high iso, yes I will buy it..
but I'd prefer something with less MP and better high ISO performance tho.

The D3s is a low light fast frame rate camera. The D700 is a less expensive low light camera. The D3x is a high resolution camera. The D800 or what ever will probably be a less expensive high resolution camera. With these four cameras most everybody should be happy for awhile.

Forget the fact that it's hot pink, the color looks like it was just painted on.
In fact, the plastic looks as like it's as low quality as the Canon XSi. :D
I don't think launching 5 or 6 new models in a year is the problem for Nikon because they have a great engineering team & marketing team. I guess the biggest challenge for Nikon is to come out the replacement model for D700 is the technical spec. Bottom line this technical spec must at least perform better or above its rival Canon 5D MkII which has stolen a great market share for budgeted full frame SLR for last one year. Nikon will not just sit and see their market share for budgeted full frame SLR being eaten away by Canon each day. Definitely Nikon will have a very significant enhancement on the current D700 like have better resolution like 24.5 MP, better continuous shooting like 6 or 7 fps without battery grip, Dual Card Slot for CF & SD, more powerful new generation of “EXPEED” image processor that will improve the digital noise at higher ISO, improved viewfinder (may be 97 or 98%) and of course the HD video mode (most probably is 1080p, 24 or 30fps AVI video recording), just to name a few.
I am starting to get left out Niko, You keep showing us all these new cameras of yours, OK you have yet to show us your Mickey Mouse camera, but just get it over with and show us a Group shot of your complete gear, incl that new pinky

Yes Pete.
There is possibility that Nikon will reduce the continuous shooting like 5fps as you mentioned.
However, this is a "critical spec." which mean Nikon needs to consider very deeply the right spec that can promote this new model. For 5fps, 6fps or 7pfs without battery grip are all possible number!
So alan, are you saying the Nikon "D800" specs are not concrete? Are you just saying it could have a fps of 5,6 or 7 but your source didn't confirm the fps?
NikoDoby, Nikon still has not finalized this feature. Like Pete said, it could be 5fps like in the current D700 or may be it could be 7fps like what I heard from speculation.

These are the specs your source told you or this is your guess? I just want to get that right.
