Video is very important to for film people, who generally don't care about stills, but would love to make use of our awesome glass. It's also important to people who would like to embarrass their kids in 20 years. So there is broad consumer appeal, and a high end niche appeal, we enthusiasts and still photography pros are the one's who are having the hardest time wrapping our heads around it all.

I will say that there is an emerging class of multi-media artists who are utilizing both film and video. I've seen some really impressive stuff. So I wouldn't knock video SLR's. I'm just not ready to start using them... yet.

Sony will be bring video to all of their DSLR starting sometime next year. I've heard that they haven't yet because they're doing something "magical" about the rolling shutter. Whatever that means. Could be just what Nikon did to the D3S and apply distortion correction via software or something.

Chatter I've heard on other Sony rumor sites. One "source" even spelled out a Sony "roadmap" I can't remember on which forum it was but the source said they had a relative who worked for Sony or something like that. Anyhow the "roadmap" listed a lot of HD enabled DSLRs coming in 2010. I think he had the A850 listed before it was announced but he said it would be called the A800. He said it would be another full-frame and he got that right.

I'll get video in my next SLR, so maybe it's ironic that I've criticized people for complaining about the lack/"poor" performance of Nikon's video implementation. I would love to replace my aging canon camcorder with a camera that will shoot fantastic stills and more than acceptable video. Besides, like people have said here, there's no reason to complain unless it's replacing a feature you need.

Here the extreme use of a DSLR as a camcorder, Sorry it is Canon 5D MKII but just imagine a D3s mounted inside this setup

So you can use it like a proper cinematographic camera, mount it on your existing booms/dollies, output it's feed to your existing monitors, let your first assistant camera do the job he's trained to do, use you existing collection of filters, need I go on?

Even if you don't own any of those, you're likely going to be renting them, and if you went to film school your instincts would be tuned to using the followfocus, even if you don't have a second man playing puller.

You are right Soap: This is a lot cheaper to build a Pro Camcorder this way than any other way, The same thing from RED would a lot more. I read somewhere that lots of studios in India are now using this setup

And no I would newer want to own something like this, but maybe in larger cities you could some day rent it and then together with your highend DLSR have a real PRO camcorder
