on the new Nikon D3s and the same ISO adjustment on most other DSLR's across most other brands. Why not just adjust to the ISO the camera can use and have the actual ISO displayed, does really matter that the ISO is done different below 200 and above 12800 on the D3s (above 3200 on my D300).

The new 1Dmk4 has a ISO range of 100-12800 with a boost to 50 and 102,400.

I'm probably the only one on here who thinks this but:
Cameras with good ISO's tend not to go as low as 100. The reason for that is when it's more sensative to the light, it can start at 200 (and thus allow higher shutter speeds) and unltimately allow higher ISO's overall. This is the reason many digicams go as low as ISO 64 and why many recent DSLR's start at 200 rather than 100. I wouldn't expect 100 anymore for the most part except in the special push modes.

It was my other post, but I tried to look for a Nikon 50mm F1.8 > images that's how my son always looks for things, then click on pictures that show product. Anyway that is how we looked at the Sigma 200-500 and that was on the NR box for a while, but now after looking at the Sigma 300-800 lens that is what the NR box want me to get
Yes I am afraid of what Soap could come up with for an explanation to the ISO settings, but why not just call the ISO what it is

The boost ranges are when your getting out of range of what the sensor can do. The low boost settings (50iso) loose contrast because the camera is basically dimming the results to mach what an ISO 50 would do. The High settings are just too noisy for them to "include" them and give amazing results for large prints.
I like to use the Lo-1 (ISO 100) setting my my D300 because it gives the smoothest results when you have plenty of working light. I never use High-1, it's just too noisy for my tastes.
Dnot know about the hi boost but the low boost is done using software on the recent nikons.
The ISO 12232 standards define the meaning of "film speeds" on digital systems.
To the best of my understanding, the HI+ settings are when Nikon can't meet that level of precision.
PS - Most all my initial replies are quite short and sweet, it is only when more information is asked that they get lengthy and verbose.
Like soap said, Nikon and Canon uses the Hi and Lo settings when the results are inferior to a minimum. They don't want to claim such a large iso range as 100-102400 when the 102400 blows.
So showing the actual ISO setting is kind of a legal binding setting. So Hi .3, .7, 1.0 or Lo .3 etc prevents camera manufactures from getting into legal trouble. I would rather see the actual number than Hi Lo whatever
They advertise that the camera can do ISO 100 - 102400 (D3s), but you have to adjust in a odd way, still don't get it. Most software programs when viewing your pictures will show the ISO number and not Hi or Lo something
Maybe just ship with a warning and have a menu lock/unlock for the extended ISO area and when done so give a warning about the effect of such a high ISO, then show the actual ISO

What they advertise is often very different from what you get in the testing lab. I think Nikon and canon come the closest to advertising actual ISO. Other manufacturers "cheat" a little more.

bmxdad, that's a really good idea. It makes no sense why they can't do it that way. You're right about how software reads it as well.
Thanks Gentoo: I was playing with the ISO settings on my D300, the more I think about is actually somewhat annoying. So what does H .3 give me I actually don't know, all I know is that H 1 is the same as 6400
Do you guys know what H .3 and H .7 is in actual ISO
Then I could have some kind of sticker on my Camera, ;>)

If it's full stops at the H levels then H2 should be 12800. H3 would be 25600 and so on. I'm just guessing here as I've never gone that high on my D300 or D90.
Just do not use Hi and Lo ISO settings, it will not break your camera but your hart is quite another matter.
bmxdad, if you are selecting ISOs in the menu system as opposed to with the exterior button you can press the "?" and see not only the ~ISO equiv of all the HI and LO settings, but also the disclaimer by Nikon that they are approximate.
HueMan: So the D300s has H1, H2, H3 and H3 is 6400ISO
Soap: I can not figure out how to Show H ISO on my D300 like you explained, but that is strange my D300 none s model has H.3 H.7 and H1. PLEASE Nikon offer a firmware update that will allow my D300 to show the actual ISO. I am sure every Nikon user would be very pleased to see the actual ISO setting

Honestly HueMan I have taken a few 3200 ISO pics but actually not any at 6400 yet. Your new D300s might be a bit better at 6400 ISO than the old D300.
I almost used 6400ISO last week shooting a football game, but ended up using 3200 only. My 9 yr old son was shooting also and I was helping him with his camera. I will be shooting some indoor speed skating in November and I will try 6400ISO then
