As on the main blog page, below is the photo taken at 102400iso by Vincent Munier - BTW: if You haven't seen his pictures go to his page immediately :) - one of the best wildlife photographers LINK TO HIS PAGE

as for the photo, I think it's quite decent - certainly not a print quality but very usable - once You put it through Noise Ninja or convert to B&W

Usable? Yuck. Hopefully I won't need ISO 102400 anytime soon, because that just looks very messy if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong, it's pretty amazing, but I don't consider it good enough to be usable.

BTW, I took a peek at his website, and his photos are simply breath-taking.

This sure has my record beat. I used some special processing techniques and pushed Tri-X to ASA 64,000 during my photo journalism days.

    just wow !
considering some new cameras that are still coming out on a market have crappier results at 3200 this is very impressive

Yeah, that's not horrible at all. My D40 at 3200 is about as good looking as that. This is at ISO 102400 for pete's sake.

    Cut Nikon some slack. :D

By the way, what's the highest ISO film goes up to? 3200? 1600? Film gets grainer as ISO gets higher too right?

RobertD has me beat in spades. I've never pushed Tri-X past 6400.

Yea, NSXType-R, film gets "noisier" (grainier) the higher the ISO, and detail as well as midtones get lost.

NSX - indeed film gets grainier with higher ISO, and You also need some special skills to develop it once You go too high

alphanikonrex - this photo is maybe not the best example, but it shows You how the technique has matured over the last couple years. Imagine that normally You are shooting at 100 iso with shutter speed 1 sec, with iso 102400 You would be able to use shutter speed of 1/500 - 10 times better! VR usually saves You from 1 to 2 stops, and with this You get 10 stops! For me it means a whole new world of shooting opportunities. If only I could get this parameters in DX body.

Whether it's a new world or not of shooting opportunities, I still wouldn't want to use ISO 102400—unless I had to. Sure, ISO 6400 on my D300 is still amazing relatively, but that doesn't make it good. Same with ISO 102400: unbelievable relatively, but still not good enough to use.

It is simply amassing how we can cut down an absolute amassing high ISO performance of the new D3s. Really at 12800 ISO it is better than DSLR's were at 1600 not long ago:

    D1 from 1999 at 1600 ISO

    d1_1600

Yes 102400 ISO is not something I would hardly ever use, but it is there if needed, but I could have used 12800 ISO the other day shooting a night time Football game, I will post a few pics later this week. Man do I ever want this camera

this camera at 6400 is just amazing super clean and great dynamic range and lets face it thats a good thing for us all as this tech will find its way into a d700s and then we can all afford it (maybe)
