Sticky aperture ring lock. Please help.

So I have a few D-lenses. I always set the tab to the widest possible aperture, then control the aperture on the body (D90) in manual mode. Well, the tab on the 200mm f/4 unlocked, and now when I try to lock it back down it will give me f/4.8 and nothing wider. If I try to set it to f/4 the tab will not physically lock. I apply a fair amount of pressure to it, but obviously I don't want to brutally force it, lest I actually snap the tab off completely or some such.

Ironically, in demonstrating the issue to a non-photographer who is mechanically "handy" I showed him how "easy" it was to set the 50mm 1.4D to 1.4--now that won't give me anything wider than f/2! So I've got two lenses that I cannot get to wide-open.

I feel rather silly. Ok. Totally stupid.

Suggestions?

Sounds like a problem in the body if it is occurring on two lenses.

I have a 105 VR Micro that will only go to f/3 as opposed to f/2.8. I can't figure out why. My guess is it may be something similar although is was wondering if the problem was in reading the aperture as opposed to actually setting it. In your case it sounds like a mechanical problem... My guess is that you may have to send them in.

Hi,

Forcing equipment is, as you already know, a losing battle.

I'm not sure what you're doing - either rotating an aperture ring - or using the D90's aperture controller, but either should work, but the f-stop output you seek could be somewhat disappointing depending on some other factors.

Shooting wide open with a lens designed for an FX camera with a DX camera with a _close up_ of a subject will likely cause a smaller aperture than listed on the lenses.

It shouldn't make a great deal of difference in the outcome of the photo or the bokeh of the picture, but the reported f-stop and actual f-stop will be marginally larger.

I would just look at your results and see you're pleased with them and the speed of the lens.

Erm, would you believe humidity? Me either but on someone else's say-so I capped everything up well and ran a hair dryer over it. Problem solved.

As well as a distant early warning that I need to keep my gear in an environment that's more climate controlled. I had actually thought I was doing a good job there--clearly not.

Wow, surprise... I do not live in a place with any level of humidity but I had read for travel that the large freezer bags with the silica packs helps. Perhaps you might want to read up a bit more on that as an option or research a bit on line.
