Hi,
I bought the D7000 about a month ago (upgrade from D5000) and love it so far. I have the kit lens (18-105mm VR) and I bought the 50mm f/1.4D. I used the kit lens for a bit intially but since I bought the 50mm, that is all I have been using.
I am not unhappy with the kit lens, but would like to get rid of it and get either one or two other lenses (preferably, zoom) to go with the 50mm. I will appreciate if I can get some recommendations.
Photography is just a hobby (at best, I am a photography enthusiast) and I don't want to lug around heavy lenses. I would like a good compromise between excellent lenses and lenses that I can actually carry around and use.
Cheers

24mm 2.8d, 85mm 1.8g
pretty cheap, 350~ , 500 respectively new
any zoom lens that is better than the 18-105 that fits this range would either be the same quality or worse(18-105 is fairly high rated, the 24-120 af-s f/4 G seems to be the only exception, but it would most likely be to 'heavy' for you at 710g). in my opinion the you might as well go all primes
edit: 85mm 1.8d seems to be about equal to the 1.8g(if you trade the better mechanics(+metal construction vs -plastic construction) for slightly worse optics)

CheersWelcome to NR. Please spend some time searching the site...you will find that this topic has been covered extensively. I would also recommend using your body for a few more weeks and find out what type of photography you get into, so that we can make a better recommendation for your style of shooting.
Cheers...

The 24mm 2.8d is not acceptable on a d7000. I've tried it and the kit lenses are equally sharp in the center with a more even resolution across the frame, the build quality is also pretty bad...
Buying a 24-120 would be a good choice, if you can afford it, if not keeping the kit lens is not such a bad idea either. Maybe a used 17-55 2.8, that's much better than the kit lenses, but heavy as well. I personally use a 16-35vr to compliment my 50mm lens, but that route is not for everyone.Posted 10 months ago # -
nikon 18-200 VR without question.

Kit lenses and primes are really the only light weight lenses. Any pro (gold ring) lens I own is fairly heavy. The 18-200 isn't going to be sharper or really perform any different then the 18-105...it will just give you a little more reach.
Except for primes quality and light weight don't really go together....so I don't really have any suggestions for that. If you wanted more range with primes I would suggest any of the 1.8G lenses. If you want a pro zoom the 24-120 F4, 17-55 F2.8, 24-70 F2.8, or 70-200 F2.8. Of course you have to spend the money then and they all weigh around or more then 2 lbs which feels heavy compared to the variable aperture zooms.
So my suggestion if you don't want to spend the money or carry the weight get a couple primes. If you want to step up in the zooms spend the money and get a pro zoom. they are top notch in image and build quality.

To add some additional input on my suggestion...
Budget is obviously going to play a major role here. If you have the funds a nice compliment to the 50 would be something like the 17-55 and the 70-200. If you don't have those kind of funds the 70-300 might be an option, but there aren't really many cheaper options for a wider zoom if you want to replace the 18-105 as the 18-105 is one of the sharper and better performing variable aperture zooms. If you want a more specialty lens the 10-24 and 12-24 are great. There is the new 24-85 F3.5-4.5, but 24 really isn't wide enough so you would need 3 lenses if you get that...something wider and something longer.
Lastly it all depends on what you shoot. Do you need more reach? More wide angle? Faster lenses? Why do you like the 50 more?

After some trial and error this is the D7000 lens set I found most useful. Not the cheapest way but far from the most expensive:
-10-24mm DX, $900 (bought this after realizing I shot below 24mm most of the time with the 18-55 kit lens from my first digital camera)
-35mm DX, $200 (50mm equivalent)
-80-200mm 2.8 FX, bought use for $550. (I don't shoot in this range enough to go for the modern equivalent)Optional: a nice fixed macro. I got the 100mm Tokina. The Nikkor 105mm is nice but
double the costPosted 10 months ago # -
A couple that I like with the d7000
Nikkor 10-24mm - love this in landscape and situations that require a wide angle. Very crisp and clear lens
Nikkor 18-200mm - wonderful all around but after 100mm it starts to soften a bit, so be aware what makes your "boat float".
Nikkor 105mm - stunning for macro and portraits.Check out the PAD and follow them through to peoples sites to see information on various lens options. Have fun!
