Is there such a thing as a "small" RAW? I think Canon has or had such a feature, and I'm curious as to how much advantage there is to a "small" RAW as compared to a similarly sized file jpg.
It'd be kind of cool if Nikon offered such a thing- imagine a firmware update for the D800 for a quicker burst rate small RAW- it'd be useful in a pinch.
^^^ I don't know how Canon's RAW files work and how they can reduce the size. Seems weird to have a reduced size file that contains all the information? I for the first time actually shot some jpgs in the worst quality so I didn't have to resize or edit after I got them off the camera. However I forgot to switch it when I went to take some pictures a couple days later :( I now decided to just shoot RAW only instead of jpg fine + RAW. There is no point since I use lightroom now.
On that note I was going to buy the 300 F4, but now the the announcement of the 800 F5.6 I might as well wait and get that instead ;)
Hey guys - you have been able to choose the compression of your raw files since the D7000! You can choose between lossless compressed (20-40%) and compressed (40-55%) with ALMOST no effect on quality.
I'll forgive you as you have D40 and D5000 bodies.....

A DSLR is a good investment, according to this site.
However, I don't think they factored in the price of additional lenses beyond the kit lens...

Lenses are easily the best investment, if you buy them second hand you can pretty much sell them without losses.

Noticed that Amazon has like eleven used 70-200 VR2's listed for sale. What's up??!! Are people tired of toting it around or are they expecting a 70-200mm f/4? Curious.

Does seem weird. People are asking way too much though...why would I not just spend $200 more and get a brand new lens then a used in "very good" condition?
Well in the last month I have totally redone my kit..still adjusting a little I think, but so far I am happy with the change. I might get another wide angle lens in the future, but I decided to pass for now. I did like the Tokina, but it didn't seem to perform at the extremes. In those hard situations it had lens flare, CA, or ghosting which was kind of a letdown. I think I would buy the Nikon next time.
Went from:
D5000 - Tokina 12-24 F4 II, 18-200 VRI, 35 F1.8, 105 F2.8
To:
D5000 (<--Just waiting for a replacement to come out) - 35 F1.8, 17-55 F2.8, 105 F2.8, 300 F4.
If I recall correctly, September is when Tokina's new version of the 11-16mm f/2.8 is supposed to hit the USA market.
Going to a high school football game tonight...taking the D5000 and 300 F4. We will see how this goes. When I tried my 18-200 a while back it wasn't great, but the 300 should be better and I have learned a bit since the last time I tried...or so I think :)
Still need to upgrade the tripod collar with the Kirks.
Finally got around to getting my hard drive to work- turns out I was trying to restore my system to snow leopard when I was using a leopard install disc.
So now I have 866 gigs worth of data to play around with.
I still want to switch completely to snow leopard first before I do anything with photos though.

Long story short, through my studies I got a stipend of $1500.
Especially with the recent price drop of the D7000, I've been really tempted to pull the trigger, but I'll wait a little while longer and see if a successor is launched.
I'll also probably pick up a Google Nexus Tablet with the leftover money.
I also got my hard drive expansion up and running. It was easier to install than expected on the old Macbook.
Im not too lazy but people get really annoyed if you start a topic that has been even remotely covered.
So, I drifted away from photography for a while and now that Im picking it back up, its time to upgrade my D70. I'm interested in shooting sports, specifically hockey, and I'm trying to figure out which body to buy. The rumored specs on the D400 seem right up my alley but I'd really like to go FF and Im not sure how long Ill have to wait since the rumors have been pretty dead. Everything about the D600 sounds great except for the FPS.
If it were you, would you buy something thats available now or wait to see what the D400 and D600 officially have to offer. If you were going to buy now, what would you get with fast action sports in mind. (Obviously a D4 is the answer to that, but who can justify such things.)
edit: Ive thought about just going with the D600 and that would get me into FF and then Id just need to perfect my timing instead of relying on fast FPS. Not a bad thing. Thoughts?

I would say D300s with grip and a 70-200 VR.
Depends on how big your budget is, but the combination I mentioned isn't cheap either.
Good reach with the DX camera, great sporting lens and slightly higher FPS with the grip.

I rented a D7000 and 70-200 and stood in the timekeepers box at a hockey hame a few weeks ago. The 70 wasn't wide enough since it was actually 105. For that reason, I'd really like to move into a full frame body.
