    hey guru's!

Just a quick question - i just got a D700 yesterday - i used it in a shoot and set the it to RAW+JPG (normal) and now, when i got to pull the images from the card, (typically i see jpg and a nef file) i see DSC001.jpg and DSC001(1).jpg - no NEF files. what gives? did i do something wrong here?

look forward to hearing from you and getting your feedback.

    thank you kindly in advance.

Hi John, where are you seeing the 2 file names you mention? When you plug the camera (or memory card) in to your computer, go to "my computer" and click on the drive/folder with the photos in it. Sort by "size" or "type" and this should group all the raw files together. Let me know how you get on, if they are not there we'll have to investigate other avenues, such as how you have set the camera up to number it's files, as the fact that you state you have a DSC001.jpg and a DSC001(1).jpg would seem to indicate that it is resetting its counter each time. (It can't assign the exact same file No twice, so it has to put the (1) on the end).

Come back to me if you're still having problems and I'll run through my settings with you.

what happens if you set it to RAW only ?

    shooting both is normally unnecessary

if it is not new, do try a two button reset

All very good suggestions. The only reason to shoot RAW and JPG, is if you need to have an 'email able' copy of a file immediately after (or during) a shoot, and this conversion can even be done in camera time permitting.

hey there SkinBrit - i see the two files i a mentioned when opening Adobe Bridge, or when navigating to the directory on the camera. on my d60 it did just what you said, when sorting by name, i had DSC001.jpg and DSC001.NEF - now, it's like it's treating the other file as a duplicate and not writing the NEF file. (well it used to be NEF on the d60 i don't know what it is on the d700 bc i've not seen them yet). just for clarity, i don't think i've changed aaaanything except the raw/jpg option. and i am so new to the camrea, i'm still tryin' to figure everything out.

i looked under file naming and it just show DSC_1234 and then adobe rgb _DSC1234 and just so you know where, i have DSC278.jpg i get DSC278(276).jpg (and yes, i mean six there. its as though it wants to write the nef file but its putting a jpg there instead and naming it funny.

@sevencrossing - one second - let me check the "just raw" - okay - in the just raw format, i do see the NEF files. i've always just shot raw/jpg for ??safety?? reasons?

what's this two button reset? i just bought the camera, yesterday - is tthat necessary?

The two button re-set that sevencrossing referred to is a quick way of restoring (most, but not all) settings back to factory defaults. You do it by simultaneously pressing the two buttons marked with a Green dot, and holding them down for a few seconds until you see the display change. Unfortunately this will only re-set to FACTORY settings, and not your user defined ones (I wish there was this option), but you can always make a copy of your settings (I do this every time I format a card, and keep a copy of the tiny file on me PC) and restore from it at any time the situation requires. The problem with the D700 and all cameras with a single card, is where as you can send the RAW and JPG files to different cards on cameras that have 2, the D700 has to overlap the 2 files on top of each other. I think that is what you are experiencing. Can you see the RAW files if you view them as I suggested (not using Adobe Bridge)?

I am not clicking on the link, but if you want to open Nikon RAW files then download viewNX from Nikon's website for free (http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17884/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzUwNDg4MzU1L3NpZC90QlM5aVk4bA%3D%3D). This will allow you to view and edit Nikon RAW format pictures. Or any host of other programs such as Adobe Lightroom or equivalents should also be able to handle them.

    In the camera...
    Camera menu...Image Quality/RAW
    NEF/RAW Recording/Type/ON Lossless compressed
    /NEF(RAW) bit depth 14bit

This should record files in NEF, 14 bit, lossless compressed into the primary card slot

As to recovering files from another source... Using Nikon software may be the only way....

    Just my experience....not always good.....
