You would buy such a compact camera if it's priced above the D90?
where there’s smoke there’s forum fire

No way, but for a small viewfinder camera with changeable lens probably.
I'd like an F-mount rangefinder. But yeah, I'm not sure if I would buy it. It definitely depends on the price, which probably won't be cheap anyway.
F-mount rangefinder could be funny. 80-200 on a rangefinder body would be silly-looking.
F-mount rangefinder would kill the idea of a small camera, but adapter would be welcomed ...
Talking silly how about 200-400 on a Leica X1 sized camera?
You mean kinda like this

Or this

I'd do it :^)
I want to put a 400mm 2.8 on my Nikon rangefinder damn it!
I would not buy one at this price ! Especially with no real optical viewfinder !!!
What I would buy for sure is a modern Rolley 35 !!! :o)
and I OTOH would buy one if the price will be right, I think that there should be a new mount - microF (probably) and also an adapter to use the old mount; or maybe theres gonna be new pancake lens to go with this camera
Any adapter would need to be an "active" adapter and add more weight if not size. One of the "advantages" of a rangefinder when it comes to lens design is that you don't have the mirror between the mount and the sensor, so you can sneak lens elements in there. F-mount lenses (except for the few old odd-balls which depend on a mechanically locking mirror) are designed with the longer space between mount and sensor (film) of a SLR, and would need a refocusing adapter to work on a rangerfinder IIUC.
For my purposes, I probably don't need interchangeable lenses on one of these. I just want a compact P&S with no shutter lag that can match my D40's Low light performance (or even better, my D90). Give me that with a lens that can do 24-70mm (35mm equivalent) and I'll be happy.
Would I like to be able to use my existing lenses on such a camera? Sure... I guess... but probably not. The only lens I own that I could see myself using would be my 35mm DX prime. I'm not going to walk around with my giant 24-70 f2.8 attached to a tiny 4/3 camera like in Niko's picture.
Well OK, I probably would. But only to get attention
What I would really like is something like Nikon 35Ti or 28Ti with D3/D700 sensor, even without interchangeable lenses.
Like I've said before, no matter what Nikon unveils, not everyone will be happy :^(
Except for me that is :^)
And Nikon accounting of course ...
