Anyone Still Shoot Film?

Yep, still do. the old F2S gets the occasional rolls, the Blad a bit more and the Contax Gs get the most. I expect the film usage will go up more when i get the darkroom (yes we are adding a darkroom to the house!) done.

Very occasionally, but still miss the days when I didn't have to take my laptop, dozens of cords on any longer trip. Not to mention the fact of being able to shot around 100 rolls of film on one battery set.

@Jim congrats on the dark room! I've considered converting a closet, but it's a lot of work.
@heartyfisher I just shot a roll of reala; I mail all my film out for processing, but should have it back by the end of the week, and scanned early next week.
Edit: Grammar — used the wrong "it's"

Film was definitely more democratic than digital, back in those days anyone could afford same picture resolution and quality as the most advanced professionals just by buying a good film roll.
Nowadays, if you want to have the edge, you have to spend quite a few couple of thousands on new camera every year.
Today it is very difficult to find a descend lab to develop and scan your film (only handful left in the world) that using film is just too inconvenient, at lest for me it is.Posted 4 years ago # -
Tai,
Thanks!
It is a lot of work, but we are remodeling a bathroom in the house as well, so the utility room (which also has the washer & dryer) is getting the darkroom upgrade dovetailed onto the same project!

I used to use an N55. There were some major things that I couldn't stand about it, and wound up selling it to pay for my N80. I use my d60 MUCH more than my N80, because it is much more convenient.

I use my FE2 more than anything else, but I have a F100, a F80, a Yashica GSN (that never gets used). My dad has just got a Leica M6, and has a Leica R4s and a Shen Hao 5x4 camera. I shoot mostly b+w, and I develop and print all my own stuff. Yes. I am Jealous of all my dad's leica stuff, but I've been using Nikon F cameras since I was about 11. I had a Canon AE-1 before that, but gave it away because the FD lenses were a bit crap. I am only 14, but I so disapprove of digital - see Ken Rockwell's 'Digital Rot' for why..
So yes. People do still shoot film. And we love it.

Ken Rockwell's digital rot is a bunch of bullshit, kid. I'm not anti-Rockwell, I read his site mainly for entertainment, and I'm not anti-film, as I mentioned above, I exclusively shoot film at the moment, but digital has its place in photography, and you would be stupid to disregard that. Yes, it's very nice to be artsy with film, but as far as a commercially viable solution for working photographers who have deadlines and the like? Film is dead to them. Try and get a job with a newspaper saying "oh but by the way I only use film because digital is unethical to me", the paper will say suck it up and hand you a digital, or tell you to get out.
or maybe you'll change your mind when Rockwell starts telling everyone that the D5000 is the greatest thing on the planet and no one needs a D3 because they can do pretty much the same thing with the 5000.

I'm not using film professionally, If I wanted a job using photography, certainly I'd go digital. Of course no-ones going to wait for processing for press or studio stuff. And yeah I've read Rockwell's reviews of digital cameras. I'm not gonna change my mind when the D5000 comes out, because he says that about the D40, and I don't have one of those. You seem to think I live by Rockwell, I don't. I only mentioned Digital Rot because it basically says my opinion anyway, and it was quicker to refer to that. I'm a hobbyist, not a press photographer.

Sorry I didn't get back in time to edit.. I didn't mean to say hobbyist, I meant amateur.
Hobbyist makes it sound too nerdy.

I have a Nikon N80 and an F3HP. I admit I haven't shot with them in several years, but I'm going to give them a shot (pun intended) again. My daughter mentioned recently how she reviewed some old film shots and felt she was getting much better color on film (she doesn't post-process).
While you can't be lazy if you're going to shoot film, my advice to anyone approaching serious photography for the first time is to shoot film. Shooting film forces you think about each shot both technically and aesthetically before you shoot it and you will learn far more which will serve when you shoot digital as well.

@heartyfisher I love it! Nice color and contrast on the beach shot. I haven't gotten that roll of negative back yet, was expecting it on friday or saturday. Hopefully I'll get it today. I haven't forgotten about my promise to tell you how the 7500i scans negative.
Edit: typo

@ tai : thanks. looking forward to your scan results.. I have been asking around my local shops for the 7500i.. but no luck so far... I was going to Finnish off another roll this Easter.. but .. Its always rains in during Easter in Sydney !! Oh well .. Maybe next week end...

Wow, Heartyfisher, that's really cool!
What bodies and lenses did you use?
Posted 4 years ago # -
Certainly I shoot film, nearly all of my personal photography has been a combination of Leica M6 + Canon Ixus75. the Leica lives in nice harmony with my Nikons, and film lives in nice harmony with digital. Both have their places, and the other can never replace the other.

@ NSXType-R : Thanks! .. I used my old F601 with my new( secondhand :-) ) 35-70 F2.8 nikkor for both pictures. PP in Gimp.
@ fotomik : "and film lives in nice harmony with digital" I am just realizing this.

@heartyfisher - Well, since you told us the body/lens for the picture, inquiring minds want to know what type of film, too! The roll I'm waiting for was Reala 100, and it still didn't arrive as of yesterday. Hopefully it will come with today's mail.

@ Tai : LOL I was hoping no one would notice ! ... how embarrassing..sigh ..
You see .. I forget which film it was. It was in the bargain bin (newly expired or almost expired) and cost me $1. It was an ISO 400 film. Probably a Superia? It was much more grainy than I hoped. but the resolution is definitely pretty good in spite of that. It was scanned to 3000x2000 ie. 6 MP but I think the scanning could have been better may be I am hoping for too much.. I am really looking forward to finishing off my roll of Fujifilm PRO 160S. This time I am hoping to scan at a higher resolution I think it may be 20MP or more.. lets see how that goes .....

I love film. I shoot both film and digital and I don't prefer one over the other. It's just that film supplies can get pretty pricey. I have an F60 and I love the size of the viewfinder. I also like that film can't be as manipulated as digital. You know more commonly that what you're looking at is real.

They'll have to pry my F3HP from my cold-dead hand.
I still use black & white film when I can. I develop my film with PMK and get the best shadow detail even. Ilford Delta 400 most of the time, some time HP5. I used to love Tri-X, but Kodak screwed it so bad I can't see waisting my time and chemicals on it. I also use a Holga camera with HP5 pushed to 1600 - had a show recently of my Holga images, someone asked what Photoshop filter I was using to get at effect...she would never have understood how film has depth and soul so I changed the subject and we talked about her shoes.
I firmly believe that a properly exposed and processed B&W negatives will make a better B&W prints and anything digital camera...use a Nikon scanner, an Epson 2880 printer and matte paper for jump-off-the-page black & white images.

LOL Must have been pretty shoes! Did you get a shot? Still are you sure you weren't being a "chauvinistic pig" ? Just checking... ;-)
Posted 4 years ago # -
Sure do. I love my F100 and I still think the color and look of film is still better then digital.

Heartyfisher: was I being chauvinistic...absolutely. Was she a twit...well yes!
