I have my dad's FM2, and I'm planning to use it, once I figure out how to load it.
So yeah, do any of you guys have film SLRs (preferably Nikon, of course!)?
The FM2 has the 50mm f/1.2, btw.

I bought a nikon film camera (the one pictured in my avatar) for $20 off eBay. I haven't had a chance to develop anything yet. I use it with my 50 mm f1.4. Maybe I'll shoot a roll this weekend. Costco will scan film at 6 mp. I want to compare it to my d40.
I used to shoot film. Have not done so in years. But I am planing to put a few rolls through this month. Been looking around to find a good place to develop and scan them. and found one place that is giving me a large discount just for this month. ( I live in Sydney/Australia )
@ NSX : LOL yes I forgot how many times I messed up when I first learnt to put film into my camera. LOL Have fun. Try with some cheap expired film first. Oh and after you finish, don't for get to rewind before you open the film back!
@ Willis : Cant tell which camera that is.. please tell?
I have an FE I shoot. I love the solid feel, big FX viewfinder, and controls of it. I really wish the SLRs were controlled similarly, 3 Dials, one for aperture, one for ISO, and one for shutter speed, any of which can be set to auto or used manually, then you don't even need PSAM. It makes much more logical sense. I mostly shoot transparency (velvia/provia) and scan. A good exposure off transparency will scan with excellent quality.
It's a nikon N6006
35mm no
6x6, 6x9, 6x17 and 6x20 yes
4x5 yes
@willis: I got one of those... Mine is called an F601 though..
I need to toss it in the truck and take some shots with it. I'm very curious to see what the reults would be. BTW, what's the cheapest Nikon film camera that can be used with the newer G series lenses. My 50mm f1.4 is the only lens I can use on it currently. Everything else stops down to the smallest aperture.
Yes: Olympus half-frame, Blad 6x6, 6x12, 4x5 & 8x10 w/HP5+, TMAX 100, Fuji NPZ & Reala (while still available).
I haven't shot with my FM2 in quite some time, though I will never part with it.
I use all my old Nikkors on my D700. The classic 55mm f/2.8 Micro Nikkor w/digital is my favorite; razor sharp, perfect for stitching.
Used to - not any more. Digital is just so much easier and I like the results better (esp the D3x).

Yes, Heartyfisher, I screwed up the last time I loaded film in. I actually paid attention to the meter this time, changed the shutter speed to (hopefully) expose it correctly, aperture and all that stuff, and the roll came back empty. I was so annoyed!
I still have one expired roll left though. :D
@iamnomad : Loved my Half frame Olympus. Lost it though :-(
@ Willis : Check out Ken Rockwell's Lens Compatibility chart. The 50mm 1.4 is all you need man! What Focal lengths(other lenses) do you have?
@ NSXType-R : I have lost quite a number of rolls.. lol.. But not for a long time..
@Willis I really dislike the move to G-lenses because of that (also it seems more natural to control aperture via the ring). If you're in a bind or will be shooting wide open anyway, you can just fold up a small piece of paper and shove it in beside the aperture coupling pin thing to force it to stay wide open.
Nikon: F100, FA, N2020, FG, I think that's it.
Bronica: SQ-A 6x6
Mamiya: M645 1000S (probably for sale) & 645E
Large Format: 4x5
and other cameras from Minolta and Sears (Ricoh)
And a fridge full of film. *sigh* I really need to shoot more.
I bought an N75 used on ebay.. . . .works amazing with my 50 1.4G, literally idiot proof, and good shots considering I'm new to film. . .
I shoot film pretty much exclusively now, both black and white for use in the dark room, and chromes for anything I would've previously used my D70S for. I love film, but am a little sick of paying for E6 processing on my slides (it's quite expensive in Finland), and for that reason I am saving up for a D700 for when I get back to the states. I'll undoubtedly continue to use film as I love the different mindset it puts you in, plus I also have a medium format camera in my arsenal, so digital can't match that...
I scan all my chromes, and make prints from black and white in the darkroom (I scan some black and white too, but I prefer working with it in the darkroom)
Plus, most of my lenses are nikkor manual focus lenses, aside from my 18-35/3.5-4.5D and a cheapo sigma zoom I got for 25 euros (couldn't say no to that right?), so I get matrix metering with Ai-S on my F4, and stop down metering even with pre-Ai mount lenses.
-Gear-
Nikon: F4S, F3, EM, FT2, and a D70S with a dead shutter.
Yashica: Electro35 GS, Yashica Mat 124G (6x6)
Zorki: Zorki 1 and a Zorki 4 (these are birthday presents however, for my parents when they come to visit from the US in a month)
I bought Nikon FM2 back in 1982, and I still use it for B&W.
Other bodies that I use are the following: D3X, D700, and D300.
I sold my Nikon FM a couple of years ago. I had bought it second-hand about 25 years earlier and got more for it that what I paid for it. It was a great camera but had been unused for several years. My only remaining film camera is a Robot Star from the 1950s but only keep it for sentimental reasons.
If you want a manual for your FM2, they come up quite frequently on eBay or you can download a PDF from here... http://www.butkus.org/chinon/nikon/nikon_fm2/nikon_fm2.htm
Have fun.
Yay ! just finished my first roll of film in ... dunno how many years .. at least 5 years.. lets see how the lab goes with it. :-) ahh ... the old waiting in anticipation phase.. haven't felt it in years.. !!
I just got 2 rolls of film back last night and am in the process of scanning them right now. I have a Plustek 7500i scanner, which is okay, but I'm regretting not spending the extra money on a nikon coolscan. The plustek has a lot of trouble with shadow detail that is easily visible when the slides are projected.
I am thinking of getting the Plustek.. How does it go with Neg? rather than slides?
@heartyfisher I'd love to tell you, but I've only used it for slides as of yet. I've been planning to shoot negatives at some point soon so I'll probably know within a week or two
yes:
Nikon N70
Nikomat Ftn
@tai : Yes Please do try it and post your findings... Please check the opposite .. ie. check the details in the bright areas... I believe that negatives theoretically should probably scan better because of the greater latitude in negative film compared to slides.
Thanks.
@heartyfisher - No problem. I'll start a new thread once I get some scanned.
