Is anyone planning on going this year (2009)? I would love to go! The combining of the two things I love most!!! Uh I mean after the love of my wife of course :^)

Sounds awesome, but can't.
College is in the way... :D

So none of our Aussie friends are planning to attend? Heartyfisher?!
Posted 3 years ago # -
So it sounds like this event was in jeopardy of being canceled. One of the two headlining race organizations, A1GP, isn't going to make the race :^(
The V8 Supercars are picking up the slack and are vowing to still rev up next weekend :^)
But I guess there aren't any race fans on this forum and none of you actually care :^(Nikon's the main sponsor people. What better place to showcase the D3S/D300S and new lenses in full force. I bet they even bring the S1000pj too

Only if the S1000pj gets a build in cell phone, just picture a handsfree call to one of these 900 numbers

Niko,
I went the first year of the event. Found a good spot on friday to ptotograph from, returned saturday to find it boarded up, found a new spot to photograph, returned sunday to find it boarded up, took the hint, have not returned since.
For those on the non pro photog side of the barriers it was very photo/motorsport enthusiast anti social. Trying to force purchase of grandstand tickets which are useless for photography.
I find it incredibly ironic the event is sponsered by a photographic company in recent times.
Cheers

:-) Not into those environmental polluting and noise polluting things.. Cant think of a worse way to spend a day or so .. even if there could be some nice images .. Planing a trip to "Arthurs Pass" instead. :-)

bmxdad - LOL.
jsa - that is horribly rude. (can't think of a better polite word)
heartyfisher - I agree, "sports" which require energy outside what my body produces aren't sports in my book. (This includes downhill skiing unless you walk up the mountain yourself.) </grump>

Heartyfisher,
How are you getting to Arthurs Pass, hope its not in some environment / noise polluting form of transport ;-)
At least the V8 category is using E85 bio-renewable fuel and spend a considerable sum on tree planting to make up for the negative effects of racing.
Niko,
The A1GP open wheelers have cancelled and will not participate at the event.
Cheers

Unless you drive an electric car and recycle every scrap of your garbage then YOU do more to pollute the world going to work everyday. As jsa points out modern race cars use eco-fuels and do so in a much more efficient way than your car ever will. Every drop of fuel is gold in a race car. A race car driving around a track for a few hours, a few days of the year pollutes way less than your hoopty does idling at red lights the entire year!
Racing technology has always led the way for improving your everyday ride. Besides countless improvements in engine and tire tech, things like traction control, crush zones, regenerative braking systems where found in race cars first. In fact the first electric hybrid car was on a race track way back in 1998!
As for drivers not being athletes, that's a crap assumption. Try riding a roller coaster nonstop for two to three hours during the hottest day of summer while wearing a winter coat, pants, boots, a batters helmet and a welders mask the entire time. Oh and your doing this while trying to focus on your calculus homework because every time you get a wrong answer someone dies!
Thanks for sharing your experience with me jsa :^) Sorry you missed out on some great photos. I've never been to a V8 Supercar race but I love following the series. I'm not surprised A1GP didn't make it though. That series has always been in shambles :^(

On a side note here's what the Nikon SuperGP will be bringing to the track besides race cars :^)
"Nikon SuperGP catering manager Jim Green said he has ordered 400,000 beers and pre-mixed spirits, 40,000 pies, 22,000 sausage rolls, 40,000 hamburgers and hot dogs, 85,000 serves of hot chips and 120,000 bottles of soft drink and water."
I'll take a beer, hamburger, and pie please :^)

Agreed.. but I am still not going.. :-) LOL !

Niko,
I follow the series too, and go to Queensland Raceway, the end of the back straight is a great great photo spot. Been to Bathurst a few times as well.
As for A1GP, it started off as a good concept, but then multiple countries ended up being run by one team making a mockery of the whole concept.
Cheers

Bathurst is one of the most spectacular tracks in the world. I haven't been there in person but I'd love to go someday. Maybe we can convince Heartyfisher to meet us up there on Mount Panorama :^)
I've been following Marcus Ambrose and he's been doing pretty well this season over on this side of the world :^)
Thanks John

Yeah Marcus is a class driver and is starting to understand the intricacies of the ovals.
By all means we'll drag heartyfisher along, he can always point his lens away from the racetrack, toward the scenery and wildlife !
Bathurst is a public road most of the year, it's an eye opener to daudle round in your daily drive.

I think Marcus Ambrose is also benefiting from running a full season this year and that the Sprint Cup cars are finally starting to act and handle more like a V8 Supercars with spoilers and front splitters.
I'd like to rent a HSV GTS E2 and take it "sightseeing" around the mountain on those public roads :^)
Posted 3 years ago # -
Sightseeing, yeah the local plod love sightseers, probably just deport you !
Cheers
John

lol, as long as they let me "sightsee" at least once around I'll go home happy!!! I promise not to hit any Joeys :^)
Posted 3 years ago # -
Sounds like a plan Niko.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Huh? Marcus who ..?
Happy to meet up with yous if you come downunder !! Wonder what I can point my 150 macro at..

There is nothing like a checkered flag, or the one holding onto it
Alpha, you should look, nice cars, just ignore the checkered flag thingy
Pete

Are you kidding Pete? You just want alpha to "go medieval" on me again don't you.
I'm thinking of wrapping my trees with huge Nikon logos. I don't think my neighbors would mind :^)
