Hi all..
Looking foward to buy Nikon D90. my friend is coming from US to india in december.. and so have time till dec' I have noticed a hike by $50 @ amazon.. should i buy it now before any further price rise or can i wait till Thanks giving to save few dollars?

This is a tricky one to answer. The markets have been moving up and down so it's hard to say for sure. There is a rumor that canon will be increasing it's prices on Oct1,2009. If this really happens then Nikon might do the same. There are some indications that prices are already starting to go up as you have already pointed out. See what happens at least until after the rumored Oct15 Nikon D3S announcement. If a surprise D90 update or replacement gets announced too (very unlikely) then we will know more.
it was recently on sale for about $800 on amazon (last weekend). . .I would hold and wait, def check 1001noisycameras.com for updates on pricing, that's how I caught the recent drop. . .(I think it went down to $810 and is now $826 body only). . .
It'll be awhile for a sucessor, and given the fact it has that cool info button, I would recommend it for sure. . .
Don't expect the dollar to do anything spectacular against the yen. It just dipped below 90 again (think last January levels). If anything it will continue to fall which will eventually lead to price hikes. That said, I don't see them doing anything with pricing until 2010. Depending on the market, we may see rebates going into the holiday season.
Oh... and its always a good time to by a D90... its an excellent camera.
When did the Nikon rebates start up last year? It was around Oct and ran until Jan, right?

Yes there were. I think it was something like $300 dollars off when you buy certain lens and body combos. I think the D700 had an "instant rebate" of $150 or $200 dollars off. There were also instant rebates on certain lenses by about $50 dollars or something like that. I'm pretty sure the rebates started in late October or early November and ran through the holidays.

According to the rumors, Nikon will announce new products on the 15th of October. I would wait to see what they announce. The most likely DSLR camera announcement is an upgrade to the D3. I could also comment (as a D90 owner) that it's never a bad time to buy a D90, the sooner you buy it, the sooner you can use it. It's unlikely that the D90 will be replaced soon and it's also unlikely they would offer the same size of instant rebates used for the much more expensive D700.
I wouldn't expect d90 upgrade on 15th Oct, as it has movie function already. I'll also agree with ted2001 that it's never a bad time to buy d90 - it's a great camera.
Well for $814... (at B&H, 10/1/09) it is a great time to buy.

uh, body only.
So there is going to be a new camera announced on Oct 15th besides the D3(S) but unfortunately not the D700S/X :^(
So what's the surprise then?
I'm hoping for a consumer FX body (D90ish build). My mom's a painter, and usually puts her paintings up on the web. Periodically I drop some of our gear off at her place so she can do her thing. She's great at painting, but not really into the technical aspects of photography, and wouldn't do so well with a D300\D700 type body.
If Nikon releases a FX camera in a consumer body, Its entirely possible that Dad might get her one. Perhaps then I could borrow it from time to time and put off spending another $2.5k on a camera body.
