    Hi everyone,
I have been thinking about this some and wanted to ask the forum here. Can you do portraiture with the Nikkor 35 f/2.8 PC lens?
You can definitely make them with any lens, of course, what I am curious about is if you can get that same DOF you see from a 4x5 Speed Graphic.
    Thanks!

    Cheers,
    Bill.

I would think the focal length too short. The 85 PC would be perfect. The standard 85 focal length on FX and 127.5 on DX. The depth of field at 2.8 is slow, but the ability to control background should compensate.

If I could afford one. I'd love to try. Let us know what and how you do.

DOF would not be the same as it is dependent on the camera format size, among other things, so it will definitely be smaller with Nikon, I am not sure how this affect the ability to shoot portraits though.

@ted2001, the focal length might be too short but I am shooting it (if I get the lens) on a D300s. So it becomes a nice short port 50mm.

@mb yeah Im not sure what will happen to the DOF either. I am shooting cropped sensor so that will def affect it.

What intrigues me about this is if the DOF you get with a speed graphic lens movement can be replicated.

The DOF will be the same as with a normal 35mm F2.8 lens. To control DOF the lens needs to have the tilt feature, and the 35mm PC is only able to shift.

But to get the effect i think you're after, you need to control the focus plane, not DOF, by tilting the lens, and for that you need one of the PC-E nikkor lenses.

Is this the effect you're after? http://kellymoorephotography.com/mooreblog/?p=2327

One of the cool things about the new D3000 is that it has a "fake" tilt-shift filter (in camera) to give you that tilt-shift look.

You can also get the effect with software like Photoshop

No software can "fake" tilt and shift, it can only simulate more or less successfully some aspects of it and that is geometry, in particular convergence or it can blur part of the image but it can never focus parts that are out of focus as tilt and shift lenses can.
Tilt and shift adjustments changes optical axis and focal plane (and effectively DOF) and that is something that can never be achieved using software.

@zach - yes, that look on the web site is exactly what I am looking for. Guess what I will have to do is keep shooting LF film ;) thanks for the link.

Okay, this is an old thread to resurrect, but my neighbor let me use her 4x5" view camera last night and it was so much fun. I'll post a couple of shots assuming they come out okay when I get the negatives scanned.

I'm now coveting either the 45mm PC-E or the 85mm PC-E. It was a completely different world with tilt, shift, and swing. A bit confusing, but I know I could love it. Anyone know any downsides about these particular lenses—specifically, will they both work on DX just fine? I know they won't AF, but it seems like I remember hearing you couldn't do certain adjustments on some of the PC lenses on certain cameras.

No, I think the Nikkor PC lenses will not work on anything less than a D300. Ideally on the later pro film or D3 series.

You run into issues with the built in flash getting in way of movements, but only if you've repositioned the lens to allow rise and fall and tilt movements in the same direction. Its not a limitation that makes it not worth buying.

Thanks, Squamish. I don't use the built in flash except for cls and sometimes for fill in sunlight.

I think I'd want a split-screen focus screen like a katzeye. Or is it easy enough to tell what you've got in focus even in the smaller viewfinders? Man, checking focus with a loupe on that big 4x5 view camera was unreal. If only I had tens of thousands of dollars for a digital large format back.
